Polite Notice

This is a sea angling forum for the debate of all angling related topics, including: shore fishing, boat and kayak fishing. Here you will find pictures of anglers going sea fishing and catching fish. You will find angling related debate. Sometimes anglers will retain fish for the table. Whilst we respect the personnal choice of anglers to follow catch and release practices, this is not a conservation forum and devout conservationists unable to accept anglers sensibly retaining fish should seek out alternative forums. Anyone preaching catch and release or criticising other peoples reports will have their posts removed.

its the same as my koi pond its nitrate is what causes algae blums blanket weed in ponds and algae in your crab tanks ive got a fillter what takes all the crap out of tap water before it  goes in my pond i tested my tap water for nitrate and it was 130mg in 5ml unsuitable, for fish and encourage algae blums i tested it with the filter  and its down to 12mg in 5ml  which is ideal for fish ann no algae blum

Thought it was linked to the water Ian. The amount of Nitrate in the water must vary from area to area hence some people get the algie and others dont. The thing I read about to stop the algie was called reverse osmosis I think ? But the UV filter does the same ?

Phosphate is also another big cause of algae as well as nitrates and excess sunlight. Phosphate can be found in your tap water and is also present with waste from crabs, fish etc. RO units remove nitrates, phosphates, chlorines, heavy metals and some salts & minerals. The water produced is too pure for use on its own and has to be rebuilt with usually a percentage of tapwater or buffer salts.
