Oil for 525

Can any anyone please offer any advice on which oil is best to use for calming a 525 down? I've tried a few types to date, but after a few sessions, it starts playing up again.  I've used multi's for donkey's and never had problems like i do with this reel, not even with the old intrepids etc.  Its come to the point where i feel like flogging it, but it may come in handy for when i get a yak, however, i'd also like to keep using it on the beach.

I just use red rocket fuel myself, but if you cant tame it engine oil or even 90 gear oil will slow it down. Make sure you wash the old oil out of the bearings first though. Hope this helps.

I have the original 525 mags which were the fastest ones made, the super and the extra came with the extra mags to calm them down a bit !!

Mine are fine however on red rocket oil and a mag setting of 4-6 depending on conditions. Are you sure that you havnt dropped a amgnet out accidentally when you have had it stripped down Davo ?

Line diameter and loading can have a big effect on the 525s too. If you fill them to the top with any line below 0.35mm they will be frisky no matter what you do with them, as the line level does not drop fast enough through the cast and the extra spool weight and inertia will always be supplying too much line.

.35mm is ok but only fill the spool 3/4 full
.38mm is better but still fill just below the spool shoulder

I use mine off the rocks with .43mm and fill it right to the top and it is fine like that 

Sorry if you already know about all this Davo but I mentioned it in case anyone out there with a 525 is struggling too !!

Rob, i'll take note regarding level and line diamater. I've always been aware of this, but havn't been able to get it right with the 525-so thanks for that. Mine is one of the original 525's, and you are dead right, they are very fast. So a little tinker with line level, and as Baza suggests-gear box oil, should do the trick. Also, I'll open it up tomorrow and check the mags.

do you think 525s should be run on the thin lines like f1.32 or slightly thicker .35 or.38 cos mine run like babies on the thicker lines but put 15lb.32 and they are on the edge.

When I first got my 525 mags I was so impressed that I sold my abu mags and used the penns as my main beach reel, mainly because of the superior retrieve power and speed. However when using the thin lines especially 0.32mm f1 I had a nightmare with reel control and crack offs 

It was partly solved by reducing ther line load to around half full but that cut the retrieve speed down too !!  In the end I tried going back to .35mm and .38mm mono and the problems went away 

However on some of the south holderness venues and in the river on big tides you just cannot hold bottom at range on the thicker lines, so in the end I switched back to the abu mags and .31mm and .32 mm mainlines. The abus with the smaller and lighter spools are so much more controllable and fatser on the thinner lines 

The answer for me is the long debated and awaited penn 515 mag   I doubt that this small market in the UK will give penn justification to make one though

cheers rob thats kind of the conclusion ive came to myself after a few wrap ups.
you never know greys maybe bring a reel out,i know they were developing one,and with neil mackellow now there who knows.
