New Bass Size Limits - DEFRA Bow To Commercial Pressure

DEFRA have put the bass management plan increase on minimum landing size on hold after concerns have been raised by commercial fishermen.

Some breathing space for Acko.

That hardly seems fair Glenn. I was talking about taking one fish. These size guides are to do with protecting Stocks of fish from commercial fishing and exploitation.
I actually thought the Size for keeping Bass had already been changed to 40cm I thought that was the law. I know that French fishermen can land even smaller Bass around 24cm I think? (Not 100% sure on the size) I believe French fishermen are taking Bass from our waters and selling them back to us as farmed fish? So therefore potentially If I buy Bass from a supermarket I could be buying A bass from our waters Which we arent allowed to catch and eat. But French fishermen have taken and exported back to us.
I might be wrong? Maybe that doesnt happen. But Ive been told it does happen?
If I do eat ONE 36 cm or a 40 cm Bass It aint gonna hurt the overall Stocks If I buy them from Supermarkets and this information is correct Im directly encouraging Bad Fishing practice.

I would think you,re probably correct Acko, and as far as i know the commercial size for Bass is a lot less than the sizes we are quoted too, look at all the "undersized" Bass on the fish counter next time you go to your local supermarket.

I found some information DEFRA made public about Looking at Bass before we buy it to look for Net marks on the fish and other give away signs the fish has been caught illegally.
Unfortunately I cant find it again now I am gonna have a look for it and put a link on it I seem to remember DEFRA admitting there was a problem with  Imported Bass. Wish I could find it?

There is no MLS for farmed bass, and wild-caught bass
from the Mediterranean is subject only to a 25 cm MLS
if caught in French waters, or 23 cm elsewhere. There is
no compunction upon importers of bass to provide proof
of its origin. Consequently it is possible for undersized
wild-caught bass to be passed off as farmed bass.

Ramrod ..bass do actually grow alot quicker the further south you go into warmer waters , a typical bass from uk waters of 10lb would be roughly 20 years old due to the feeding season and growing season being quite  short, wereas a male bass is slower growing again rarely exceeding 8lb in weight , In the warmer waters of the french coast the growth is very similar but as you travel further south towards morocco and the atlantic coast a typical 10lb fish would only be 12 or 13 years old ,  sea temerature is important in the way it effects feeding activity consequently the growth of bass ,That is probably why they doint have a big issue with it all, I still say lets do our bit ,just to help em get a foot hold , A particular mark may only hold a say 3  decent sized bass ,which probably come and go with the same tides so if you do get one , do the right thing and put it back as once youve took it there will only be 2 good bass on that mark instead of 3...as the big uns are solitary feeders unlike the smaller ones which school....

You obviously know your Bass Dav. I caught 3 half decent ones a few years ago not far from Scarborough (I dare n,t say where from now) but I was fishing for cod at the time with a good sea running, but since you ve all been talking about it i might have a go plugging for them in summer. It is an ideal place for them. Are they likely to be there in the summer also, or could they be just passing by?

I,m just very interested in the fish ray, there a lovely fish to catch one of my favourites , Like everyones said theres is a load of good ground around here that suite bass, The past couple of years ive had my feelers out trying to get as many reports of catches  of them as i can  ,things like locations , time of year ,tides ,wind etc etc ,in the hope i can make a bigger picture of the north easts bass fishing, and it seems there seem to be more spread than i thought, with this info ive been targeting them and i seem to do ok ,well on bait i do ,There appears to be some realy big fish around here to, for instance that 11lber which was caught from steetly pier, heard of other big fish caught too. ive got a load of spots i fancy trying but just havent got around to them ,alot of which are a long cliffe bottoms all along our coast , its just gona be a matter of time i hope before i manage with a plug , personally i think if alot more people actually fished for them we would get a suprise  , and im sure you if anyone ramrod will know alot of good ground ,with the knowledge of the coastline youl have in your head , and the crystals you possess , seems lobbers does ok , hes got some i think .
Back to them half  decent fish ray ,what time of year was it ,back end ie autum, sept oct nov ? if so this is the prime time for big ones ,if mid winter they are liable to be resident ,i think, , i would of thought though summer would be the best time to try and plug for them ,when theres plenty of  baitfish about and the water is flat and  clear ,What about baiting for them?  they  gorge on crabs, rockling, wrasse etc etc on rocky areas ,, if i were you i would  most certainly target them ,they are liable to be there again ,especially in summer at crack of dawn or dusk .

I think it was in November Dav. I had a few cod too on the same night. the bass weren,t massive only about 3lb each. I haven,t fished it much since but think it,s worth a shot. Let me know which lures you use if you don,t mind giving that info away but the water isn,t too deep so i may have to use poppers.

Ive just been using things like the yo zuri mag popper  range of poppers ,n chug bugs for surface work, crystal minnows for 2 to 3 ft work and some general floating divers for deeper say 5 to 9ft , i think this is the general type of lures you wana be looking for , i supose you could count spinners .. thr trouble is they are quite expensive , from uk shops ,although you wouldnt need many it will be worth looking on e bay ,i got a yo zuri duel allie magnet from the u.s. for 6.00 dollars ,i know i had to pay postage but if you get a couple it saves you alot of money .

Crystal poppers eh Dav they sound good! thanks for the info. All I need now is a decent spinning rod, I read once that carp rods are good or are they a bit over the top. I gave my old spinning rod away last year because I never used it.

Yeah  i would of said carp rods are way over the top , they are far to heavy to be able to have a good few hres plugging without breaking ure back , ive just been using a greys 10ft grx spinning rod rated at 15 to 60 gr ,, its not to expensive so i dont mind it gettig some stick from the saltwater and the rocks ...

Seems Whitby is the only place this doesn't really happen MFC. Probably because of the Salmon and trout in the river not many people get away with shooting nets on the shore. But then we have the salmon netter's through the summer and they must take their fair share of bass, not that I'm complaining about them.
