Minke Whale Watching At Whitby - How Far ?

I see that the Whitby Gazette was reporting that the Minke Whales have arrived in numbers off Whitby again. I know this usually coincides with the spawning of the big herring shoals. I was wondering if anyone had sighted the whales this week and how far out they are ? Would it be possible, and safe,  to view them from my yak ?

Just dont be plugging too near to them glen, I'd hate to see you take off at a great rate of knotts if you foul hooked one  :surprise: :laugh: :laugh:

 i saw  a pair last yr whilst on a trip glen but they where about 3  to 4 mile out  might be a little far for you to paddle  :canadian:
