This is a sea angling forum for the debate of all angling related topics, including: shore fishing, boat and kayak fishing. Here you will find pictures of anglers going sea fishing and catching fish. You will find angling related debate. Sometimes anglers will retain fish for the table. Whilst we respect the personnal choice of anglers to follow catch and release practices, this is not a conservation forum and devout conservationists unable to accept anglers sensibly retaining fish should seek out alternative forums. Anyone preaching catch and release or criticising other peoples reports will have their posts removed.

forget that found it , alas too expensive will have to rely on mussel and lug this winter.

Has anyone had any success with mackeral or other baits more commonly used from boats, after all if a cod can feed on one food from a boat why shouldn t it feed on it from the shore ???

Cheers Dave,

i dont think ive tried seriously for cod with mackerel , its just somthing thats not practiced around here ,well not by no one i really know , its more used when targetting whiting, flatties and other things, but in saying that ive heard people do use it and have scored,,,dont know other peoples views , maybe its just because its that smelly the cod dont get a chance with the flatties/whiting being there first ,i dont know , worth a try i supose.....

It was just a thing thats been going round in my head for a while, seeing as the boots manage a good few cod on mackeral baits, I suppose if few use it then the general concensous will be a big question mark.....maybe I should be brave enough to give it a go.

Mind you having confidence in your bait seems to put more fish on the shore, like carp fishing.....never understood how a bit of yellow plastic corn could catch fish till i got on it....and the best carp I caught using black eyed beans and another anglert on the lake said I was wasting my time......funny when I pulled a lake record out on them in February too...lol (mind you the same fish came out 6 months later and 6 lbs heavier, maybe i should have been patient and saved the beens while later in the year....lol

Wish this sea fishing was as easy as catching 20 lb carp...!!!!

Cheers Dave

If sea fishing was as easy as carp fishing i dont think it would be as fun .....with regard to cod eating macky , the probable reason for cod eating macky on boats ,is possibly due to the fact that once the fish have moved off shore there diet probably changes from scouraning the rocks looking for crab etc to eating fish .....

I once got told that once cod reach a certain size they cant sustain their body weight on worms/crustaceans alone and at this size they move onto fish (whiting, poor cod, rockling etc etc) aswell.

So the general gist was if you use a large fish bait you may not get many small fish but any you do get will be of a good size.

Dont know how true it is but there ya go. It would make a bit of a sense as I remember reading about using whole whiting as livebait for cod and there was a very nice rig which did the job.

As for peelers seen as i'm a lazy b*staRDo I get all mine sent from all over the joint. Got 250 the other day thro the post and all arrived in tip top condition. Theyre just having a bath as we speak.  ;D

Someone told me of a cod fishing vid in Bristol channel where they use live whiting for cod and the fish they caught were rather large. Its the same on the boats here, a macky fillet wont catch many cod but if you get one it will likely be over ten pound.

Smokey, just make sure you aim for the green yak not the orange one, the one with the prawns rowing ray along, it will be up on plane trolling a huge rapala behind for a mother bass !!

Cheers Dave.
