This is a sea angling forum for the debate of all angling related topics, including: shore fishing, boat and kayak fishing. Here you will find pictures of anglers going sea fishing and catching fish. You will find angling related debate. Sometimes anglers will retain fish for the table. Whilst we respect the personnal choice of anglers to follow catch and release practices, this is not a conservation forum and devout conservationists unable to accept anglers sensibly retaining fish should seek out alternative forums. Anyone preaching catch and release or criticising other peoples reports will have their posts removed.

Lightweight Pirks
« on: June 14, 2007, 02:38:32 PM »
I,m contemplating making some light Perks for yaking if I ever get out again. The size I have in mind is about 10mm in diameter and about 150mm long and loaded with a single hook with maybe a feather or two around the hook for effect. I,m hoping they will impersonate a sandeel but the bar needs to be solid if possible. Iv,e searched our house and don,t seem to have anything I can butcher  ;D Any ideas lads?

I use 38g cebars, look very much like a sandeel and the cod loved them the other day. I did make some long slim jobs from some thin stainless bar that I "acquired" shall we say but they dulled up and were not as good as chrome lures. I had a look through a fladen trade catalogue the other day and they do masses of decent pirks from 60g to 180g for between £1.50 and £2 each, I suppose it depends on the ground you are going to use them on and how many you expect to lose. I have been losing 1 or 2 a session off flamboro.

I thought about drilling the nose out of an old 5oz lead mold I have to take a wire all the way through, colouring it with some cheap powder coat and fit a hook one end and split ring the other. They would be cheap but not sure how well the shape would fish though  ???

Ray why dont you get ureself to the plumbers merchants  and buy a couple of meters of 10mm crome piping , i know you wanted solid bar ,(possibly to reduce the awkwardness of running melted lead into the small dia hole ) ? , instead of doing this why dont you fill it with ball bearings or similar like  lead strips , this way you,l get the weight and also add a little rattle to the pirk , which can only be a good thing , ,,,,, and when you start bagging up ,,, remember who give you the idea.... ;D.....hint hint .....commission/secrets/cystals... ;D.........p.s the idea is already patented ......

Might have to have lay it on the "leadman" and see what he comes up with, by my calculations they should work out at about 6p each  ;D
Shame on you Dav! trying to winkle some Crystals out of old Ramrod in my hour of need.  ;D

The fladen pirks mentioned by Rob are good Ray. I bought a couple last summer and on the 1 boat trip I did they outfished everything else. Think this one is about 5 oz and cost less than £1.50

Glen are there made from solid lead ?,if so we use to tie flying hooks on to them and call em rippers,,, as they just go dull and stay shiny unlike chromed gear ....thats if they are lead....

Yes they are lead Dav. When I used to fish a lot with killer on the boat all he would use was lead pirks, they were really dull in colour and he always caught the most fish. I used to fish with my mate Chris Dickinson on his little coble and we would paint the pirks black - they were excellent on sunny days when the water was clear. The yellow ones used to get the pollock. Cheap hamerite from Boyes was the best paint.

ray bill has some lightweight pirks in.100gms and a range of colours.thats all i was using the other day and they fished really well.didn't lose one all day but even if you lose a few it won't break the bank.think like i do and that is if you catch 1 codling on the pirk it has paid for itself.

Plumbers merchant 10mm tubing (chrome) heat it with a blow torch gently whilst lead melting then use narrow laddle to pour into the hot tube so the lead flows right down to the btm end which you crimped prior. then crimp top drill fit split rings away ya go.

Used to make similar up for ex work mates on odd trip out of whitby from 10mm up to 25 mm.

Tubing easily available from b&q if can t find other supplier.

Dave.
