took a look at The good old magic seaweed last night and figured it was OK for a bit of yakking in the morning, so a quick call to the Yak miester, Quint  and a chat about venue. following a couple of recent trips to the flatlands south of Bridlington , I have developed a severe allergy to sand & mud so we agreed it was maybe time to start muscling in on those prime Areas north of Whitby. We did receive a bit of help & encouragement from one of the natives although he requested we keep it quiet . so site selected & programmed in to the faithful Garmin & of we go.

Nice easy launch for a change, pity about giving the council another fiver though.

quint brought some groundbait.
once on our chosen mark we selected a depth of about 55ft which was our max depth due to the 150ft anchor string that i carry
lovely morning and nice to see cliffs again. for the technical amongst you the Paddle from our launch site was 1.98miles & took 41minutes at an average speed of 2.39mph


from our vantage point we could clearly see Bambi leaping about the cliffs & a flock of french partridges flying by(subtle link to another thread ) did have flipper around for a while that was nice to see.
 
anyway i dropped anchor & quint latched onto my stern in our now practiced way with a good ebb coming through we both put lines down tide. there was a touch too much current for the 5oz leads we had on and our lines were tripping away across the bottom. I was using a fine braid and because of this was able to get my bait to fish & promptly hooked into a nice codling of about 4lb. At this point quint once again amazed me with his knowledge of all things fishy, even before it arrive on the surface he could tell it was a female full of Roe, and shouted over Spawney B*stard 

Anyway the current was obviously a bit strong for the tactics we were using, so i rigged my other rod with a 5oz gripper & cast it up tide & let the line bow as described on the site. not long to wait before another bite & i wound up & promptly hooked another smaller female with eggs(how can he tell ?).
so method sorted we both fished in the new to us uptide mode & soon quint was into fish & the smile returned, i asked if this one was spawney as well, but he said no this was skill ?



so we finished with a couple of codling each & a bleg & and undersized lobster, not fantastic but a good mornings entertainment & we then decided to go exploring the exposed scaurs of fillet tail to take a few photo's unfortunately i forgot to wipe the water off the lens so a few good shots turned out useless. here is a selection of the others

Top report lads and well done, I was wondering how long it would take you. If you look up into the cliff behind you on the last shot you can see GJW and The professor off back to the future half way up the cliff side. Nice to see you got amongst the fish

Great report guys, nice to see some yak caught fish - looks like you got the good weather. I got away from work early tonight and shot to Mappleton for a few hours yakking but was a fair bit of chop on with the southerly wind whipping it up. Not one to give up I decided on a couple of hours plugging on a local lake, got one little pikey of about 4 pound. Had fun teaching myself plugging again, not really done it since I was a boy. Messed about trolling too - both forward and backward

You lads will soon change your mind about the holderness as a yak venue in a couple of months when we start puttin on pics and reports of big skate, doggies, hounds, bass and summer cod

Great report and pics lads  some lovely looking kelp beds up that way !! I should like to drop a live butterfish or rockling, on a leadhead into them weedbeds at high tide on a flat and clear midsummers early morning 

We were hoping to get out on the yaks on sunday but looks a bit touch and go, with the remnants on the strong southerly we are getting today and tomorrow, combined with the wind going north sometime on sunday 
Looks like shore again then unless it improves

Yeah it was a pleasant day and good to find a few fish - I always do well when I latch my tackle up your stern Dave 

The ole faithfuls are truly "holed" Worm so I found some old PVC chesties which did the trick

It certainly is nice ground around the corner and I'm sure there will be a few pollock and other species running up and down them scars, we are certainly spoilt for choice on our coastline and I'm sorry Rob theres little down them beaches that appeals to me  other than the chance of a tope

got to agree quint , you can have the beach to yourself Rob, too much sky down that end for me  Don't think an hour to the fishing grounds will be everyones cup of tea though, compared to North landing where you are fishing 5 minutes after launch.

just a word of warning, this uptiding from a yak should be treated with some respect, we anchored up in a pretty good ebb, it would be very easy to get side on  & tip up when hauling the anchor back, i am going to put a pellet on the end in future, that way if it gets a bit hairy i will chuck the pellet out and leave it until the tide eases.

Too true - it is much easier and safer to pull up once the main tide has run through - it is important then to hit the right spot first time, as the actress said to the bishop

Until I joined this forum a few months ago I never even heard of kayak fishing but the more I see others posting about it and showing photo's like that the more I'm interested in the idea.

Looks like great fun, I gotta get one

It does seem to have that effect doesn't it. I must admit that when quint first joined this forum I was sceptical about what I was hearing. But then he posted more and it got my interest going. But what made the difference was when he posted pictures of his catches and where he goes. I was then hooked and always eager for the next report. Slowly one by one many of the other forum members started buying kayaks. Ray, New Dave, Jellyworm, Rob Q etc bought them last year and the reports were fantastic. Now Im on the verge of getting afloat myself. Im certain this type of fishing is going to be massive in the UK and as you say reports like this make you want to get out there yourself. Im looking forward to Hot summer nights drifting around our coastline. Ive got a few ideas about what is possible around Whitby but I get the feeling the reality might be even better
