This is a sea angling forum for the debate of all angling related topics, including: shore fishing, boat and kayak fishing. Here you will find pictures of anglers going sea fishing and catching fish. You will find angling related debate. Sometimes anglers will retain fish for the table. Whilst we respect the personnal choice of anglers to follow catch and release practices, this is not a conservation forum and devout conservationists unable to accept anglers sensibly retaining fish should seek out alternative forums. Anyone preaching catch and release or criticising other peoples reports will have their posts removed.

I need to buy a roof rack , but i'm not sure what type and size of straps i'll need to secure the yak to the roof rack, I imagine the straps may be some sort of buckle straps?

Can anyone please offer me any advice on this?

Thanks a lot

Hi dave, for a single kayak, 3 metre straps like the ones in the link below are fine. Ive got those exact ones and they are perfect for the job

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/BODYGLOVE-CAR-ROOF-RACK-TIE-DOWN-STRAPS-kayak-canoe-3m_W0QQitemZ270274550504QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item270274550504&_trkparms=72:984|39:1|66:2|65:12|240:1318&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14

as for the roof rack, just make sure its a decent strong one that fits your car and is capable of taking the yaks weight!

Those straps will be fine for a single yak. For just one yak the rack on it's own is fine, if you need to carry more than one then it's worth getting uprights.

The only thing I would really strongly reccomend is that when you tighten the buckle you tie it off with a half hitch or two to stop the thing slipping. They are great when they are new but the teeth on the mechanism polish after a while.

Here speaks the bitter voice of experience, I once arrived in Bala to paddle the Tryweryn, upon arriving in the town after a good old journey from Teesside someone pulled out in front of me. I slammed on the anchors and stopped quick style, my boat slid off my roof, hit the bonnet and slid about 20 yards down a crowded Bala high Street  :clown: :embarrass:

Another top tip is cover the rack with foam to give better grip to the yak and protect it from knocks. You can buy swish velcro foam covers from watersports shops or use pipe lagging and gaffer tape.
