Well Done To Ryan Vasey AKA Ryanfish For Winning The Whitby Fishing Club Junior Section.

Polite Notice

This is a sea angling forum for the debate of all angling related topics, including: shore fishing, boat and kayak fishing. Here you will find pictures of anglers going sea fishing and catching fish. You will find angling related debate. Sometimes anglers will retain fish for the table. Whilst we respect the personnal choice of anglers to follow catch and release practices, this is not a conservation forum and devout conservationists unable to accept anglers sensibly retaining fish should seek out alternative forums. Anyone preaching catch and release or criticising other peoples reports will have their posts removed.

Simon is really the one to answer this one but I do know there are some very good quality inflatable/collapsable framed kayaks out there and you can pay well into four figures for one. There was two guys who undertook the Eddystone Challenge in a pair of these kayaks and they really did look the business, I'm pretty sure they had keels to combat side wind etc, they folded up into large holdalls.

A nice piece of kit to take abroad with you on flights but I dont think I would have confidence in one with our jagged coastline and certainly wouldn't fancy fishing from one.

I don't think inflatables should be dismissed as serving no purpose, they could at times prove beneficial when the real thing is absent, and I'm sure a few pricks will do no harm at all

This doesn't really look seaworthy to my eyes.   You need to be fast on the sea to be safe, it's your main weapon against tides / winds picking up.  Anything under 4.5m is likely to be a bit slow.  I paddle a Feathercraft Java which to my mind is just fast enough to be safe (see review below), but you can add a grand to the price of that.:

http://www.whitbyseaanglers.co.uk/forum/fishing-anywhere-in-the-uk/review-of-feathercraft-java/0/

Packing a kayak up into a big holdall is great, and it's handy to pack it up over winter.  Drying the kayak before you store it is less fun.  Heavy weight nylon cordura seems pretty resistant against hooks, even when you've got something like a bass with loose trebles being thrashed about between your legs  :surprise:  (unlike my dry pants ) .  In fact mine also has a layer of hyperlon (thick black nylon / rubbery stuff) where you land fish, so no problems there.  But, personally, if I had the space to store a hardshell, I would get one.  If you don't, then these types of kayaks are your only option.  As Bassyken points out, there are some very good foldable kayaks out there capable of big distances over open sea, but they ain't cheap.

I'm not sure about inflatable kayaks cus kayaks in general don't interest me. My mate has one, it looks uncomfortable and I just don't think I'd feel safe on it, plus I don't see the point in suffering the torture of paddling to be able to enjoy my fishing, there are easier ways to do it! Unless of course you enjoy paddling and it's all part of the fun for you. Each to their own I say! Anyway I am interested in fishing off another type of inflatable vessel. I recently bought a 3.3m inflatable sport boat, it's like a rib but the keel is inflatable instead of GRP so you just deflate it and put it in the boot of the car, I'm sure many of you will have seen people with them on the beaches. I've got a small outboard that's easily lifted out of the boot and onto the boat. I never intended to fish from it but I'm thinking it might be a good idea. I got it to play off the beach with my son and I've actually only had it on the water once up to now but it's easy to launch and I'm sure I could launch it at most of the kayak launch sites detailed on this website.

What does anybody think if this? Would I be accepted into the small fishing vessel fraternity or am I destined to be blacklisted  I could offer free tows back to the beach if the weather turns bad!!
