Well Done To Ryan Vasey AKA Ryanfish For Winning The Whitby Fishing Club Junior Section.

Polite Notice

This is a sea angling forum for the debate of all angling related topics, including: shore fishing, boat and kayak fishing. Here you will find pictures of anglers going sea fishing and catching fish. You will find angling related debate. Sometimes anglers will retain fish for the table. Whilst we respect the personnal choice of anglers to follow catch and release practices, this is not a conservation forum and devout conservationists unable to accept anglers sensibly retaining fish should seek out alternative forums. Anyone preaching catch and release or criticising other peoples reports will have their posts removed.

Have you ever caught...
« on: July 25, 2007, 03:10:57 PM »
Any of the following in the Cleveland/North Yorkshire area (Say Hartlepool to Filey as I'm sure Holderness- Humber throws up allsorts)?

Sole
Gurnard
Turbot
Dogfish
Rays
Shad
Red/black bream
John Dory

You never seem to hear of these being caught, especially from the shore but you'd think that with the varied ground that forum members fish and the hours they put in there might be a few surprises over the years.

had quite a few shad at Whitby west over the years, one thing you will see if you get one is they have huge scales. Ive had a tiny turbot from sandsend and I saw lobbers get a dogfish at Whitby pier.

a very small lemon sole off the gare years ago, and i have had grey and red gurnard from the the gare, only very small though, they were in amongst the dragonetts, i've had turbot all over the place, saltburn pier, sandsend, holderness, but they are always small.
i had a shad on the float off saltburn pier a few years ago, only small, but i did wittness one over 2lb one time, gorgeous looking fish with massive scales :)

I wonder if these shad at Whitby run up into the estuary to spawn then.
I've always fancied a go at them with a little Mepps or a fly but the Severn, Wye and Towy are a bit far to travel for something that could be there one day, gone the next.
Some years a go I caught something that looked rather like a Burbot at Whitby, where the new 'Marina' apartments are on peeler while fishing for flatties.

had shad and turbot from the n gare. a dogfish would be a novilty over here but they are a pain in the arse on the west coast you dont even need a hook to catch them either they grab hold and dont let go, some places they are there in plague proportions, it can be tiring dragging them in when youre targeting something bigger.
