Handheld VHF

Im currently looking for a vhf radio. One of the lads suggested this one

Should be mate but a few of us are using Icom IC M33s as they float which must be a good thing in this game. If thats a little expensive I would opt for an Icom IC M31 which you should get of about £99. Icom all the way . . .

The important thing is, whatever VHF you choose, clip it to YOU not your kayak

good price as well, my icom would have cost twice that if it had been bought in the UK, i would recommend a lanyard attached to your pfd anyway so does it really matter that it don float ?

How about an Icom M34. Basically the same as the M33 but with US and WX channels. Look up item 330243005098 on eb@y. I ordered one from this guy and it was here in a week £103 all in and no duty to pay. If you get a bit off course you can always switch to the US channels as well

Only one problem with Electronics from the states. You have to send them back to the states if anything goes wrong.

I got the Entel HT Submersible
I can reccomend it It works LOL
It gives over 12 Hours on a single charge
Its the Submersible bit that convinced me to get it

the M34 is the model i have, its a risk as BB says but touch wood mine has been fine and at half price compared to UK.  i thought it was worth a punt.

the us channels are no problem as you just don't use em and its got all the channels & functions we need

I'm definately with Newdave on that one. If it was a brand I'd never heard of then I wouldn't have bothered. You just don't get any better than Icom so I figured it was worth the risk.

But as ever its down to personal choice. Go for what you feel most comfortable with Bob.

If you get the manual from here http://www.icomamerica.com/en/downloads/DownloadDetails.aspx?Document=84 and look at page 27 you'll see the yanks use slightly different frequencies/channels compared to the international range which we use in the UK.

The M-34 can be switched between the different regions with ease.

Ive got the standard horizon one I mentioned. I havent taken my vhf course yet and obvioulsy need to get that done asap. In the meantime I intend to carry the radio anyway for emergencies only.

Am I right in thinking channel 16 is the one for emergencies. The radio says channel 16 usa ?

Not sure mate but to be sure bring it with you next time out and just ask the CG for a radio check. I did yesterday, after an hour or so of not hearing anything on my radio and with no reply from Newdave I wasn't sure it was working (plus felt quite alone and iscolated  ) , so i did a radio check and they very happily answered my stright away and re-assured me all was operative, felt a lot more content and safer after that too  .

Will they mind me doing a radio check seeing as I havent got the licence yet ? Also what channel do I go on to ask for the check ?

Ive been listening to the local charter boats on channel 10 so it does seem to be recieving ok.

No they wont know (or care in the slightest) and as long as you use half right protocol no one will be any wiser. Just call them up on channel 16, Humber coastguard X 3, this is Baramuda Bob X 3 ( should make them smile  ) can I have a radio check over. . .they will come back Baramuda Bob this is Humber Coastguard, receiving you load and clear. Its that easy

You'll need a VHF DSC short range licence and an owners licence. The second is free if you apply on line here....

I wouldn't worry too much about using it without the above, as long as you know how to use it in an emergency. The course is good though as it will normally cover other types of safety communication equipment as well.

Oh, and a good choice of set as well, best warranty out there. That matters on a Yak as well as they tend to get a few dunkings.
