This is a sea angling forum for the debate of all angling related topics, including: shore fishing, boat and kayak fishing. Here you will find pictures of anglers going sea fishing and catching fish. You will find angling related debate. Sometimes anglers will retain fish for the table. Whilst we respect the personnal choice of anglers to follow catch and release practices, this is not a conservation forum and devout conservationists unable to accept anglers sensibly retaining fish should seek out alternative forums. Anyone preaching catch and release or criticising other peoples reports will have their posts removed.

Letter from Leanne Stockdale

Quote
19 February 2008

Dear Sir/Madam
A meeting with the angling sector is to be held at 11am on the 23 February 2008 at the Bridlington Rugby Union Football Club, Dukes Park, Queensgate, Bridlington.

I have decided to hold a meeting to clear up any confusion as a result of the last Flamborough Fisheries Liaison group meeting in November last year.

The Purpose of the meeting is to:

    * Identify and resolve all areas of confusion following the meeting in November;
    * Clarify the current management of the Flamborough Head Special Area of Conservation;
    * Outline the roles of the Flamborough Head Project Officer, North Eastern Sea Fisheries Committee and Natural England;
    * Discuss Natural England’s ideas about designating a small experimental No Take Zone within the Flamborough Head Special Area of Conservation.

No Take Zones (NTZs) are a type of Marine Protected Area (MPA) that provides the highest level of protection for both commercial and non-commercially valuable, marine animals.

The government are committed to introducing additional Marine Protected Areas through the Marine Bill by 2012. They have proven to have benefit to marine wildlife and in some instances have benefited fish and shellfish of commercial and recreational value. However, because there are very few of these sites it has not proved possible to study their effects in a scientific manner.

Natural England have requested that I help them work with local interest groups to identify a location for an experimental site that is acceptable to people who use Flamborough Head for recreational or commercial reasons.

Essentially I think that the Environment Sector (such as Natural England) and responsible commercial and recreational fishing interests all want similar things – a healthy and productive marine environment with abundant wildlife some of which you can eat (e.g. fish and shellfish) and some of which you cant (e.g. sponges and sea slugs) and I would like to work with the fishing industry and recreational sector to see what benefits we can achieve.  Essentially the best way to do this is to sit down and agree how to do this at a local level.

This is not part of a staged plan to shut down fishing at Flamborough Head.  I will be contacting the commercial sector to arrange a similar meeting to discuss these issues too, with a representative from the commercial sector invited to the forthcoming meeting, to ensure there is transparency throughout the process.

I look forward to seeing you on the 23 February.

Yours sincerely

Leanne Stockdale

Flamborough Head Project Officer

Yes it is an open meeting and if you fish the area it is in your interest to go as it hopes to clear up any misunderstandings from the last meeting unfortunately I cannot make the meeting

I think all us kayakers and everyone who fishes the cliffs, beaches around Bempton and Flamboro should try to attend. I'll go, anyone else want to join me?

Well said carpyken. When this was muted and we got the minutes sorted out there were a lot of posts asking when the next meeting was going to be well now you know. If you don't show up and have your say don't moan afterwards. At least at this meeting we have a chance to formulate what happens. Wait for the Marine Bill you may not get the same chance.

They arent that clever mat. Thing is Bill, by and large these people just dont understand fishing. A lot of the fishing/conservation meetings last year were organised on a wednesday night - club night. Then people would give me a hard time for not going to the meetings.

It is vitally important that anglers are well represented on this issue and also make Natural England aware that they have picked a very inconvienient time for most anglers to attend and that future meetings should be more attuned to their audience.
Should be raised and minuted.
Again I can't be there due to work commitment, although it doesn't help being landlocked in Nottinghamshire and not knowing much about local detail. I wish you all well and would encourage all those who can attend, to do so.

I attended the meeting today. Turn out wasn't bad. The minutes should make for interesting reading. A few things I noted were

1. No take not only means no take - it means no fishing at all, infact it likely means no fishing, no bait collecting,no power boats, no kayaks, no winkling, no bass nets, no hobby potting, no commercial activity, no dog walking and possibly no walking at all. The idea is to have an area completely untouched by man (Other than the scientists and students who will study the area to see what happens).
2. An area was proposed, by anglers and commercials, south of Flamborough which was felt to be acceptable to both parties. Natural England will return to say if that area is acceptable to them in the next couple of months. It was a difficult one to call and I left feeling unsure that Natural England were happy with the proposed area.
My perception is Natural England will want an area north of Flamborough. The only thing I base that on is my own perceptions of how the meeting went.but only time will tell.
