im going to torquay for a week in august,anyone got low down on where to fish and what baits and rigs to use,and what sort of fish  :pray:i should get thanks for your help

hi mate was there last oct fished brixham break water  ok for gars n usuall summer speceies some big ells there too under ur feet ! fished i nice mark called berry head with light gear good for wrasse black bream to bottom baits  had a trigger fish about 3 lb to  any thing can turn up there ! hope this helps !

How Do!

I have done a fair bit of fishing down that neck of the woods but never around torquay. A short drive away is Slapton which throws up plenty of dogfish, mackeral and the odd Bass or two of an evening. Take a BBQ with you and make it a family event.

If you like spinning for bass then most rock marks hold them. Around Start Point is a good location. The species list down there goes on forever but you will need heavy gear if bottom fishing due to the chance of catching conger. Near there is a place called east Portlemouth. It's the only spot i have caught a thornback but other flatties hang around too along with mullet. East Portlemouth is the opposite side of the estuary from Salcombe about half an hour from Torbay.

Two other places I have tried are hope cove. Down in the harbour at inner hope is a break water and to the right of that is some good rough ground. again there are lots of snaggy bits but I caught a miriad of mackeral on my 2- - 30 gram casting weight spin rod. if you are a bit more agile you can clamber over the rock and fish of there. watch the tide though. You will get cut off but the harbour is very sheltered and shallow so no need for RNLI. Than there is thurlestone sands. I found near the rocks to the left of the beach to be a good spot for bait or lure and when i went snorkelling there the day before I spotted a massive shoal of Bass who seemed completely unbothered by my presence. But with bass you have to be in the right spot at the right time and I never got one but I did take a pollack and a couple of mackeral. Just wish i had more time that day.

I am off to Exmouth tomorrow so when I return I will let you know how I got on around there. I am going to try either Budleigh Salterton, Sandy bay or exmouth itself with bait and lure.

I had one of the strangest experiences down there one august about 20 years ago. My lad was jigging a Toby along the sea wall in the harbour and getting small pollack. I was sitting on the wall watching him and noticed an endless shoal of sprats coming in with the tide. Curiosity got the better of me and I snagged a couple with a treble hook and put them in a bucket. I put one sprat on the treble under a pike float 6' down. The float never settled. It shot under as though a brick was attached to it. The 10lb line snapped on the strike.

Second sprat went the same way. Never found out what they were.
