You will find angling related debate. Sometimes anglers will retain fish for the table. Whilst we respect the personnal choice of anglers to follow catch and release practices, this is not a conservation forum and devout conservationists unable to accept anglers sensibly retaining fish should seek out alternative forums. First Tope Trip of 2007....
« on: July 15, 2007, 10:14:41 PM »
cps, Trouty & myself took advantage of what looked to be a break in the recent weather to grab a trip after Holderness's tope today.

Launched at South landing & were in the water by just before 7am. Messed about getting some mackerel around the Smithwick for nearly an hour to get the 30 or so we needed for bait.

Ran down the 20 or so miles to our usual mark through patches of rain, arrived just before 9am, just as the rain eased for once!!

Started mackerelling again while we rigged several tope rods - macks not in short supply down there, but were on the small side, in fact some of the smallest macks I've ever seen!! Good bait size, though...

Tide was already ebbing, & things looked good....they still looked good 2 or 3  hours later & we hadn't had a single run....however, by then the wind had started to lift ever so slightly & odd light showers were coming though..

I was still jigging for macks when "something" dead floated past wrapped in a bit of gill net. My mackerel trace got tangled on the sunken bit of net, but with the tide, it was all I could do to hold it with my spinning rod - I was about to ask cps to give a hand when one of Trouty's rods screamed off & the first tope of the season was on - really ran off hard & Trouty did well to control it. Eventually cps hefted her over the side for a pic:

Meanwhile I was still attache dto the dead "thing" & cps eventually came to my rescue by hooking "it" with a heavier rod - turned out to be a very dead & well pecked/ chewed porpoise wearing about 10m of heavy gill net...

...got my mackerel rig back, though...

That was it for the ebb tide unfortunately, & as the tide slackened & we swung on the anchor rope at slack water we decided to move closer inshore to try for a skate or a 'hound. Anchored about 400yds out, & chucked a few rods out with bits of crab or mackerel. I had a couple of bites that produced nowt, but eventually a bit better bite produced this small skate, first skate I've caught for about 30 years, & first ever in Yorkshire!!

About 3pm we went back to the tope area, but couldn't tempt another run. Wind was getting pretty snotty, rain was pretty heavy (for a change!!) & after an hour or so we had a fairy bumpy 20 mile ride back to Flamborough.

Decided to have a troll for a bass before trailering the boat, had maybe 45 mins trolling with plugs. We had 4 decent bass, 2 to Trouty - the biggest 2 - Trouty was obviously "on a roll"!! - 2 to me.

Back on the trailer for just after 6pm.

All

Sorry, no pics of bass, went straight back, bless 'em!!

Capn cps would tell you better but trolling speed's about as slow as boat/ engine will go - maybe a couple of knots?

Just about bang on Mart, depends on engine (4-stroke or 2-stroke) at that speed a reasonable sized 2-stroke would probably bang and chaife like hell scaring any fish away.

I had a chat with DB on Lizzard whilst out on the Yak yesterday, he said that you had got one around the 50lb mark

I wouldnt fancy unhooking one of them in the yak  :o :o

Nice one Mart, good report and pics. It,s nice to know how the other half lives. Mr Scaife certainly leads a jetset type of lifestyle.
Suprised you caught any Mackeral at all using those hooks.  ;D

DB called by when we were bassing & said he'd seen the yakkers "round the corner". He left us, then immediately picked a floating rope up on one prop!! Thought we might be able to return his favour from a couple of weeks back & tow him in!! ;D

Also, forgot to mention, Trouty - yesterday's man of the minute - also caught a 2lb ling when we were anchored up on the tope grounds - another first for us down there!!! :o

1.6 mph into the tide yesterday and i would gesue 4 or so with tide, dont know if it made a difference or it was that there used to be more fish but my last boat wouldn't go any slower than 2.5 into the tide and we seemed to get more

Bloody floating ropes somebody will have a serious accident around Flamborough one of these days!

Had a go for the Tope yesterday everthing seemed perfect but not one single run in three hours, ended up back inside with the Bass and Pollock,

Went wrecking the day before though
