Hi, Recently took my boat out on bridlington coast and experienced problems with my 50hp engine.  We ran it for a short distance on full throttle, when the engine suddenly de-accelerated. It didn't cut out altogether, and continued at this slow pace. After turning the engine off for a few minutes, and re-starting it the problem seemed to resolve itself for a short time, before reoccurring. Anyone got any ideas as to what could be the problem. I have little to no experince and would appreciate any help or advice

Could be many things mate, is it a two stroke or a four?? At 50hp I'm guessing its a four stroke and sounds like contaminated fuel, probably with water. But this just a guess, worse case scenario, if it not circulating cooling water properly it could be over heating and siezing but I doubt this the case. Let us know the engine type, manufacturer, configuration etc.

thanks for reply. It's a suzuki 2 stroke 50hp outboard motor.  It was the 1st time I had taken the boat out on the sea, the motor as far as i was aware was pumping fine.

ok mate, is it pre mix or has it a separate tank for two stroke oil which is injected separately into the chamber?  If you happy its getting oil into the mix i would check you filters and as long as its definately getting oil its probably down to the main jet setting which can be adjusted/tuned. You said it de-accellerated quickly, then I would really check its getting cooling water and more importantly oil in the mix. 50/1 is the norm.

I had the exact same problem with an evinrude i had on my Orknet Fastliner a few years ago.I'm almost positive it turned out to be the CDI unit,once replaced it ran perfectly,if you can eliminate the fuel suggestion,try your plugs,maybe worth replaceing them,the HT leads could also be a possability,cracked or worn,if they are worn or cracked,the charge could be arking and earthing somewhere on the engine,let us know how you get on and make sure you eliminate the simple faults before playing with the CDI unit....tight lines

Yer you right smokey, didn,t want to suggest CDI  unit  just yet but it a definate possibility. Our Harri a little inexperienced with outboards/two strokes so just tryin to cover the basics first. Doesnt sound like a miss-fire the 'sudden' de-acceleration sound a little worrying, as if the piston tightening in the bore which has to be heat/lack of lubrication.  . No outboard expert but I rebuild plant machinery for a living, such as Honda GX engines, Stihl saws, Makita cut-off saws ect

hi harri.you say it's the first time you've had the boat out on the sea.
couple of questions:
how long have you had the outboard?
did you have fresh fuel or old?
is it the first time you've used the engine?
have you had it serviced?
how long since the engine was run last?
is your fuel tank plastic or metal?

Me guilty too,if it's with a plastic tank,it tries it's best to flatten itself  ... tight lines

could also be the choke sticking on, water/dirt  in the fuel/ carb  first thing to look at also check the in tank filter if its been stood they get a gummy film over them.

 just a start, could be much more sinister if you haven't got the skills, knowledge or tools then may be best to get professional help

I have a 86 dt30 which i had various problems and found the people to speak to are international marine top lads and great service from them your not pulling in air are you from the fuel line connections.
