Early Summer Kayak Fishing

With a warm South West wind forecast and clearing seas myself and Robq headed off to the usual haunt this morning hoping for some early summer sport - Mr. Newdave was also hoping to join us later once his domestic chores were complete 

We arrived at 10 o'clock at North Landing which boasts an excellent car park that charges 1.50 per day, why can't all car parks be like this? - there was also a large gathering of bird watchers out in force to look at a duck 





The day had a summer feel about it without the crowds



Rob performs an essential task in order to enjoy a comfortable mornings kayaking 



With rocketing food prices Rob is always looking for a way to reduce his weekly shop 



The sea was flat and clear so we both were using lures, I had a codling Whilst Rob pulled out a couple of billet with his new rod



From North Landing we headed north to Bempton to get shelter from the SW wind, there were a few private boats working the same ground - at Staple Newk we pulled in and joined the hundreds for a bite and rest, which also allowed some "research"







After the break we headed further north where Rob managed a codling and I had a brace of billet around crab scar





Newdave did eventually meet up with us at the end of the session, apparently the duck had been within 5 yards of his yak which was a concern for me  - being a member of the aristocracy I was sure he would have necked it for the pot 

We all enjoyed some superb sport with a shoal of billet that had gathered around tennis courts which the lads will post pics of - I'll leave you with this one that clearly shows the effects of months of inactivity

Nice one lads. Looks like the season is just about on us.  I think Ken was planning on going out today too, if he's recovered  from the long walk on Wednesday that is 

I've just dropped the yak off the shelf in my garage.    It fell nearly five feet onto a concrete floor landing right on the rear corner of the transom area. A couple of dents on the lower hull and a crack in the upper hull is the damage. Looks like I've got some fibreglass work to do before she'll sail again.

oh damn Clive, I suppose the beauty of fibre glass is that it can be repaired tho - and perfectly too, if it was one or our Oceans it would have probably been a write off - I do some work for Humber Inflatable Boats (rib builders), if you would like me to get them to sort it let me know, will pull in a favour. Great report guys, looks fantastic out there - wish i didn't have to work. Hoping to get out with our Worm tomorrow evening down our way to bag a ray or two  . Anyone out tomorrow watch out for localised fog, keep an eye on yer compass

Great report yet again Iain, thanks for sharing your day with us. Makes me look forward even more to getting afloat (once the crabs are stored at minus 20).

Was the duck pretty ? Theres a nice big fat one currently residing in my Freezer. Cant wait till our lass serves it up with some nice parsnips and assorted veg

Cheers Ken, Once I get back I'll have a proper look at it and assess whether it's within my meagre abilities to repair it. If it need a professional job I'll be happy to take recommendations as we don't have that many boat builders in Barnsley. 

That 'duck' we saw was a Brent Goose by the way.

Morning Folks, another great report from Iron Man Quint
as reported i was unable to make the launch due to domestic duties but managed to get to NL for 2 oclock and afloat just after, i was unable to contact the lads and it was a bit fresh outside the landing with a decent swell, so rather than risk getting all the way down to Bemo to find they were not there i took the easy option and head round to Brail. tried a few spots with bait but no good, the mass of people on the cliff top indicated that dam bird was still around, but i was surprised to see it fly past my bow and land on the water about 20yds away. In full view of the massed ranks of twitchers who numbered approx double the average attendance at a Whitby FC match i attempted to sneak up on it and get a photo. in defense of the twitchers it was a very impressive bird being a male like the one below

anyway as Ian man has pointed out the old git sometimes struggles getting up the cliff, but the biggest problem of advancing years is the bloody eyesight, once again i failed to notice the moisture on the lens so this is my best picture, sorry Rob your string of 3 is useless 


I then headed back to North landing as the wind had eased and i met the two paddlers off thornwick, they had had a bit more success than me so i put on jiggers and joined in the fun catching billet, my rig did not seam quite so attractive to the billet as Robs, in fact they would not touch the bottom leadhead which was left to a spawney cod that liked the look of it 

so nothing left but to provide the Iron man with some amusement as Rob & I got red faces pushing the yaks up that slope.

loving it again & its only going to get better from now on

Although a pain in the arse its good to see the billet back in good numbers as they provide good sport and are easy to catch when fishing with my young lad. They've been absent off our coast in any significant numbers for about 10 years but the last 2 years has seen an increase in them.

cheers lads a really good day even if the cod were'nt really there in numbers just yet. It was more of a recce session for me for the shore fishing, Its amazing how much you can learn about marks by paddling around in casting range with your fishfinder  We clocked up exactly 10 miles on the GPS Iain !!

It was so flat yesderday that we could get right up to the cliff base !! usually there is a bit of swell backwashing so you cant normally get that close. I found 19ft of water tight under big railings  at 100 yards there was only 25ft !!  makes you wonder if we cast right over the top of the fish when fishing the tops sometimes !!
