does colour matter
« on: July 16, 2007, 10:34:41 PM »
when fishing with shads why does it matter what colour it is when the bottom is so far down. there must be no light what so ever when fishing 100 meters plus deep on rough ground from a boat. so why do some colours catch better than others can the fish pick out light and colours all that way down .
can any body shed any light on this  ??? (excuse the punt).
regards Shane

Only guess work mate but I think a fish is adapted to its own environment so will be used to hunting in low light levels. Things are probably really clear to them despite the low light levels that human eyes would find difficult to deal with. As for colours I am not sure but Paul Kilpatrick swears the dark blue ones by Storm and Calcutta are the bees knees.

What do other people think ?

Yep colour can make all the difference Shane. Even the make of shad can effect your catches. Some have a tail that definately wobbles more in the water. Maybe its advisable to get several packs and carry them with you. They are cheap enough to be able to take 4 or 5 colours.

there's not many places around here where the water is that deep mate..
i would say if you were fishing in depth's of 100m+ that colour wouldn't make any difference at all.
in shallower water down to a couple of hundred feet..i think certain colours do make a difference..
shallower water..down to maybe 200ft yes

i think all the fish would see at real depth is a shadow, so a dark colour is reccomended,,,i think its a general rule of lure fishing in dark water , although like ringer said in shallow when the fish has good vision colours would work better ....

thanks for the reply guys, so at the end of the day it sounds as though it is a bit to do with the colour but it also has a lot to do with movement as well and i suppose the experience of the angler,
(practice makes perfect ).

So this shad fishing, what would be the minimum effective depth for fishing shads then ? As in when fishing inshore marks withing say 1/2 a mile to a mile out ?

Or should I not consider using them ?

Cheers Dave.

the answer to this question is quite complex,  but i will try to keep it simple.

basically as depth increases water progressivly filters out the colours of the spectrum starting from the red end (of the rainbow colours) which make up white (day) light , put simply the red light does not penetrate to much depth at all. while the blue end penetrates the deepest (american research has shown this penetration to be over 2,000ft!) but the light which goes deepest of all is ultra-violet which is almost useless to human eyes as it is at a wavelegth which to us is not visible ,
however ther is evidence to suggest that as red light is not present in other than the first few feet of water it is believed that fish cannot see it as we see it in normal daylight.
however going back to this ulraviolet thing there is evidence to suggest that where human eyes have not evolved to utilise it, fishes eyes have!! in this way there is probaly a fundamental difference between the colour vision of fish verses the coulour vision possessed by humans.

from diving experience the human perception of colours is as follows :-
black- is what it is
blue -very visible but gets darker with depth
green  -as above .......................
yellow turns green then gets darker
orange turns dull then gets darker, then brown
red -turn dull then brown then darker then black

but remember this is through human eyes!! -so who knows for certain?

sometime ago i remember reading a book by john brennan in which he described the making of lures for jigging from white plastic bags (and boy do they work!) in which he said that white plastic bags are florescent particularly when veiwed under ultraviolet!! - i am certain that he was onto something with that theory! -dont believe me? -just cast you mind back to anytime in the past when you have been in a night club where ultraviolet light is in use how visible anything white is!!
-in an otherwise dark place at that!!

A very interesting piece northbayotter - I am always confident when using anything white - as for the effects of ultra voilet light in night clubs I always thought it was me been p*****d

Funny how the reference to ultra violet has been linked to nightclubs.....although I have never seen cod in the clubs in Hull, there are very often huge shoals of Old Trouts in them !!!

Cheers Dave (sorry bored before going to work on half nights  ;D ;D)
