Cream Crackered
« on: June 29, 2008, 10:40:21 PM »
I had my maiden voyage on the kayak today down at Flamborough with the southern raiders plus inland raider Ian 07 who very kindly took a 40 mile detour to pick me up and get me to the venue. We launched at 10.30 and headed north for about 2 mile. With wind and tide coming at us I was absolutely cream crackered by the time we started fishing. My guides for the day were Bassyken and Ian 07 who really put themselves out to get me started. After a few calm words of reassurance I managed to get sat side saddle and started fishing on the drift back down towards Flamborough. Pretty soon I was into my first Kayak caught cod. Only a small mop of about a pound but a great feeling to get one aboard. As he was only a small fish and lightly hooked I returned it alive and well. Not long after came a second cod, his time slightly better at around the 2 pound mark.

Keen to catch again I paddled back up a few hundred yards and had another go. This drift yeilded a small codling again about a pound which I sent back to fight another day.

After several more fruitless drifts the weather turned a bit sour so we headed for Flamborough and a nice cool pint in the pub near the car park. Iain dropped me off home about 7 ish and Ive been laid on the settee ever since. I feel like Ive ridden a horse in the grand national, I ache everywhere, which suggests you need to work on your fitness if you want to get the best out of this sport. Also I have a face like a beetroot because I forgot the sun tan cream.

All in all a great first outing, and Im eager to get off again. But Ive never felt so knackered in a long long time.

A big thanks to all the lads for their help and encouragement today.

Off to bed now  :sleepy: :sleepy: :sleepy:

Nice one Glenn,i hope you didn't feed the fish  will probalbly bump into you in next couple of weeks.Did you see them powerboats racing today,i was 100 yards off high brigg in the boat with Langy and saw 2 coming from gristhorpe, they were on us in seconds,he'd eased off before he passed us,he was only doing a steady 60 or 70 knots  :surprise: Frightening things, big racing ribs with humungous inboard engines, when they opened em up again they must have been doing nearly a ton  :surprise: :surprise: tight lines...

An enjoyable day and it was good to see Glenn and Ian 07 out on the pond, sometimes I really do wish I had an engine not too dissimilar to them impressive powerboats Smokies on about  :surprise: it was an equally enjoyable evening, Madras, 3 pints of giuness, and watching the crouts lose, and sleeping like a puppy  :sleepy:

well done again Glenn, not the easiest day with that strong offshore wind & a bit of chop in the squalls, missus BB will be delighted when the pounds start falling off, i have shed a stone since i got the yak  , although you could use kens antidote, to combat weight loss (plenty of bacon butties). I got there early and called in to wake Basseyken (now affectionately known as Shirley  :canadian:), his horses were grazing by the caravan and he was still snoozing, but i managed to rouse him & we had a breakfast in the north landing cafe whilst the rest turned up. Ken kindly nominated his self as Glenns minder for the day, don't want to loose our main man do we

I pushed of early and as i got outside north landing the power boats came passed about 200m away and gave me a wave, & i braced myself for the wake, but there was surprisingly little, much worst was the bridlington queen that didn't see why it should alter course or slow down for for a  plastic boat  :whatever: good job glenn missed that lot

I put my Gps on yesterday & clocked up 10.5 miles in the afternoon, which included a 1 mile paddle back to the rock i had lunch on unsuccessfully looking for my sunglasses   (another senior moment) add onto that dragging the gear up the landing and its easy to see how its a more than useful workout, no need for a to go to the gym Glenn, although Iron man quint still throws in a 10mile run & 2 cliff climbs most days, just to put us whimps to shame

so well done on the first of many, see you again this afternoon ?

congratulations on your maiden voyage glenn, beleive me it does get easier. the first time i went out my back was in tatters but i dont have a problem with it now.

We went out yesterday at 5 am from Runswick but the strong offshore wind spoiled it and we decided not to stick it out at the decent marks and made the nightmare hjourney back into the bay where it was a bit more sheltered. i had 1 dab and that was it!

might see you on the water soon Glenn

Well done Glenn, good to see you getting out there on the yak  What do you think to this kayaking fishing then mate?

Myself and Matty had a trip off Runswick yesterday but by the time we got to the cod grounds the wind had really picked up, even with the drogue out we were drifting far to fast to fish properly plus it was getting dodgy so we (slowly) headed back in.

It took us twice as long and with 5 times as much effort to get back! that plus the lack of sleep the night before I was totally knackered, I just slept 9.5hrs solid! We anchored up and fished baits in the bay for a short time where Matty had a nice Dab and I actually fell asleep for a brief time which is a kayaking fishing first!  :snore: I was rudely woken up by Matty shouting "TIDAL WAVE!!"  :scare:

Again well done Glenn, just shows how quickly some people can actually pick it up, within an hour of getting on the water you were paddling like a good un. Rigging up, sitting side saddle and happily landing fish, well done mate. Nice to see you n matty got out for a paddle Sam, you gonna have to watch Glenn, think he's on his way to plunder some of your big pigs  .
Just a few more pics. . .

Good to finally see you out on the water BB

The paddling and fitness side does come surprisingly quick once you start to get out fairly regularly

Just wish the bloody weather would allow that

Another great night tonight. No fish other than a  small codling, billet, pollock and a whiting non of which were takable. But what a stunning evening. I think I havent had such an enjoyable night in a long time. I can now see what the attraction is. As we came in tonight around Sandsend cliffs I just spent some time staring down into the kelp forrest below. Awesome
