congers don't like it too cold.. in winter they move into deeper water where they are less affected by the temperature.
i know some people do fish the rock marks at night in summer, but nowhere like as many as in winter.
i honestly think if someone tries under boulby  ;)at night with big mackerel baits in the summer that eventually one will come.
a few years ago when we started to go uptideing in that generel area and we caught bull huss, thornback rays and turbot, all species we had never caught before..so why not conger?

We catch conger up in north east scotland from the shore, and my mate sometimes gets the odd one's in his pots around staithes, so they are present on the north east coast, i think 1964 was a very cold winter and loads of conger got caught out in the shallow water and were washed up dead all along our coast especially redcar area..

my mate john nixon had a 16lb conger last summer in the newbiggin summer open,  i also caught a strap of about five pounds off marrine drive some years ago. they are there, and with global warming they are going to increase in numbers as are all the other warmer water species, which we are all noticing first hand....

divers that have been off the south gare have told me that there is definatly conger eels off the end of there but ive not seen them or seen any one fishing for them!

I have seen a couple of small strap conger off South Gare, there will no doubt be the odd good conger living at spots along our coast also diver's said there is some good eel's in Cowbar gulley, the sea defence boulders at Cowbar jetty and all along the Marine drive would be  the perfect habitat for them, but if they were there in good numbers i am sure we would of seen alot more come out over the years, its not a case that we arn't fishing for them because congers arn't fussy eaters and will eat most baits especially peeler crab, maybe when you have had a bite and then been stuck solid and you get your gear back but hook snood missing, was it a good conger in its lair?? maybe but i very much doubt it, i just think i.m.o that they are not present locally in the numbers as they are across the west coast or further north on the east coast..thats not to say it wouldn't be worth trying to target them at the likes of South Gare but you will need to use heavy line and a good hook, when we fish across the west coast for them we use 50lb main line and 100lb mono hook snood and 8/0 hook, i prefer heavy mono snood its better for the eel because if you snag up with an eel and and loose your gear the eel will eventually chomp through the mono, but not so with the wire and probably end in a dead eel....

I've had one off the rough ground off Boulby in a boat, it was only a little one and to be honest when we first pulled it up I thought we had a mal formed Ling. We were fishing mackerel flappers and uptiding, the weather was really grotty and our Skipper Mick on the Sea Urchin that the water was too cloudy to bother jigging the wrecks. As it happened he was quite prophetic.

I got daily prize in the festival for it otherwise he would have gone back  :embarrass:. I have heard tale of one around 35lbs that came up in the crab pots around there.

I would have thought the South Gare as well, especially during the summer nights when all the macky remains have been thrown over the edge.
Years ago, i was told that a bloke used to fish Penny Hole on the big drops for conger, using mackerel with an old greenheart rod and scarborough reel. He would have needed that gear to get them out, i suppose.

Crabing at south gare last year with me mate, stuck me hand in a deep hole and felt something move,as i pulled my hand away out shot a stap conger of about 3lbs or so....doggy do do my self, lol. It swam about for a while before disapearing into a load of rock and kelp.Might be worth a try fishing in there for them but the place is also full of crabs so bait wouldnt last very long.

as well as John Nixons conger of 16lb in the Newbiggin open already mentioned. In the space of two weeks conger of 22lb and 35lb came from the Craster area. Dunstanburgh Castle always gives a few to 10lb  :yes:every summer and there are always a few reported taken in pots. Chances are that when you have had a lunging bite and not been able to move the fish, it could well have been a conger. All these are usually taken by accident  :blindfold:, so like other species if you give it a concerted effort  :yes:you never know.  :educated:
