Congering in the north east ??
« on: July 24, 2007, 04:21:28 PM »
Alright guys,

Have caught a bit of the conger bug but I'm pretty sick of having to travel to do a bit of congering but you never seem to hear of any being caught around our area. Do you guys think its thats people just dont fish in summer with whole mackeral baits or that there just isnt many around our area?

Ive got two places in mind to have a try for them but dont know whether I would just be wasting my time or not..... :-\

What do you guys think? ever heard of any from our area? I know there was one come in in one of the opens last year i think.

Ive often wondered the same thing? I would expect to catch them on night sessions if there was any lurking around our coastline.
The only ones Ive heard of come off Wrecks on the boats Never heard of any from the shore.

It's a question often asked & debated, often at length. Not sure why, but I doubt very much whether there's currently anywhere near enough congers about around here to warrant wasting much time - there's enough hours expended in rocky areas with big crab baits to see an odd one or 2 come out if they were there.

As a comparison, Scarborough (& area) guys have been going up to the Fife summer comp for probably 5 or 6 years, & in that time, maybe amounting to around 50 mandays of angling activity, I know of 4 or 5 that have come out to these anglers (none to me though ???), & it's not really an area renowned for conger fishing.

On the other hand, hey - give it a try - if you'd told me 10 years ago that a days boatfishing would produce a 50lb tope, a skate & 4 bass (as last week's did :o), I might have replied similarly to above!!

When I used to fish Cowbar jetty about 20 years ago Something used to take our baits right in under the jetty and snag us up We lost loads of gear
The line used to go slack and by the time you reeled up to your gear It was fast under the Concrete jetty Ive always suspected this to be Congers but never managed to catch one
Cowbar Jetty is all different now to how it was then But I wonder if it might be worth a try?

Cheers for the input.

I know a lot fish summer with crab/worm etc and there must be literally thousands of hours fishing put in over summer but as far as i know larger eels wont take crab and worm etc. I know the small congers do but I just wonder if these are caught and often just mistaken for a common eel and I dont know of many people who fish the summer around here with large fish baits or even fish baits atall which might account for a few eels.

Funny you say Staithes acko as its somewhere I had in mind. Sure id heard someone say that when they were younger there used to be a huge conger which cruised up and down the harbour wall. To me it seems ideal, all the huge boulders have plenty of hidey holes and with the small boats coming in there always plenty of heads and guts going into the harbour. The other place I was thinking was whitby pier chucking down the side of the stone part, or back towards the bandstand where there is that big pile of boulders.

Might have a chuck next lot of small tides providing theres plenty of fresh mackeral for bait.

I know a spot that is giving up a few ling from the shore. Young lad I know had one a couple of weeks ago and and I know of 2 others from the same place. No conger though, but Lobbers suggested to me fishing a mackerel bait in there.

only hooked one in our area and i never even seen it im certain thats what it was as there are known to be lots there. it was in hartlepool marina, and it took a live whiting. i will never forget the strength of it. it peeled line of a penn 535 like it was in free spool, after 10seconds it went slack and i reeled in a worse for ware yt.
id be suprised if there where no conger in staiths harbour its ideal i bet there living in the sea defence boulders. ive also seen one and heard of a few coming from dunstanbrough castle

There,s been odd ones caught over the years so there is some out there. I,m not sure if cps caught one off the Brigg. I think one was caught at Bemmo last year too. They,re very vunerable to temprature change so around here is,nt the ideal location as opposed to the west and south coast which has the benefit of the gulf stream. Did,nt lots of them die in 1963 during the cold winter? Someone once told me they were all getting washed up dead.

you've got more chance of catching a mermaid of cowbar jetty than catching a conger.
you would be wasting your time and bait. ::) ::) ::)

there are congers on this stretch of coastline.
i've never understood how nobody ever seems to catch one on a rod and line.

seen em caught regularly in trawl nets. and the same in lobster pots (under boulby)..

would think the best chance from the shore would be night time with big baits..

they arn't there in big numbers, but they are there.. ???

one of the main reasons why conger arnt caught around these parts could be that the party boats dont anchor into the wrecks like they do in other parts of the country. here its drift fishing for cod, cod and more cod

i have dived most wreaks within a 10 mile rad of filey and most in brid bay and onley ever seen one, been on a few holls diveing in the chaneel and aroun the channel iles and normandy and strugle to think of many dives when i havent seen any, and big uns to allot bigger than has been caught on rod and line like sections of a tellegraph pole , so i think that there are not enough in the area to bother trying that and the fact that you would catch them by accedent on ling gear
just my 2p worth anyway

We've talked from time to time about having a go for them, divers have seen the odd one or two on some wrecks so we know they are there.  Chris Wray of Reckitts caught one from the shore a few years ago (might of been Aldbrough) weighed around 90lb if I remember correctly.  When I say caught I mean that in the loosest possible terms, it got caught in his line and rolled up, he foul hooked it on the retrieve and managed to get it ashore.

I remember speaking to Dave Mouncey who worked for the EA on the Humber and he told me his lad had had 2 congers in his eel nets in the Humber, this would be about 1995, one weighed 55lb the other weighed 59lb, that was quite well documented in the local press.

Also Bull Fort at the mouth of the Humber used to produce some bigg(ish) eels, especially for round here, but I haven't heard anything for years from there.

Like Chris says they aren't common, you'd expect anglers to occasionally pick the odd one up when fishing with large fish baits for ling, but I haven't heard of any.

By the way Mart, you might get a 50lb tope if you keep at it for the next 10 yrs ;D

I have Dropped a Big Maccarel Flapper near the side of Skinningrove Jetty from my Boat rod and left the Reel to run free Once or twice to see if there was any conger living in or around the pipes n stuff. Ive never told anyone that before incase they took the P**s
Only caught crabs on it anyway But I think owt is worth a try Its the only way to find out.

It was my experiences on Cowbar Jetty 20 years ago that gave me the idea.
