Polite Notice

This is a sea angling forum for the debate of all angling related topics, including: shore fishing, boat and kayak fishing. Here you will find pictures of anglers going sea fishing and catching fish. You will find angling related debate. Sometimes anglers will retain fish for the table. Whilst we respect the personnal choice of anglers to follow catch and release practices, this is not a conservation forum and devout conservationists unable to accept anglers sensibly retaining fish should seek out alternative forums. Anyone preaching catch and release or criticising other peoples reports will have their posts removed.

I heard that yesterday. Not sure what it is or if there is any truth in it.

Best places for info are :

http://www.defra.gov.uk/news/2007/index.htm

http://www.fishupdate.com/

Although neither of them mention it, it's strange that I heard the same thing as you, and my info came from a potsman at Saltburn

Seems that the cod quota has already been used up in many areas, so boats will either have to avoid cod, or discard them.

A ray of hope if this idea spreads

Under 10's quota has been used up, thats why they have been stopped landing it, the larger PO's are at around 90% as well, which means that by September nobody will be able to land cod and they will be dumping 100's of tons in discards, as many are already doing so now

Its also mentioned here :

http://www.fishupdate.com/news/fullstory.php/aid/8228/MSP_welcomes_fish_stock_protection_proposal.html

In the recent studies off our coastline it is reported that the trawlers struggled to find a cod over 4 years old. Given that the majority of fish are therefore "Small" how likely is it that they will report areas holding small fish and "VOLUNTEER" to stay away from those areas ?

Its a good idea but it needs some incentives eg extra days at sea for boats taking part.
