« on: June 12, 2007, 06:33:04 PM »
Alright chaps,

Im off to ireland a week on friday and just found out I cant take my headlamps Tiga & MFA due to the lead acid batteries. Can anyone suggest a decent cheapish lamp which takes standard batteries which I could take over.

Cheers guys

princeton tec apex is the mutts nuts !! small, light and takes 4x aa batteries so you can take as many as you like with you. with 2700 mah nimh rechagables in it will last between 5 and 80 hours depending on which settings you use it on. An average session will last 9 or 10 hours easily. I sold my TIGA after getting one of these, no big heavy battery or wires to get in the way. Not the cheapest but you can get them for around £60 if you shop around on the net.

go to maplins and buy an LED LENSER, the £35  one is the best cheap headlight i have ever bought, bright as son of a gun and 3aaa bats last ages, there is a cheeper lenser which is not as bright which has 3 led bulbs, the £35 one has one large led, you could use it to go down boulby, fish the tide and go back up without turning it off,  trust me they are sheeeite hot :-\

Hi Rusty,

If you really mean cheap, then you are spoilt for choice these days, just go for an LED bulb jobbie and forget the Halogen lamps as they eat batteries. I got a 7 LED lamp from either ALDI or LIDL for around £4.00, (says TRONIC on it) that's actually brighter than I need, all I want to be able to do is see my tips and to bait up. Really bright lamps ruin your night vision especially when the bloke next to you shines his mini lighthouse in your eyes. I can see the point if you're into rock fishing and serious cliff climps though.

I have another that you can swap from 2, 4, or 6 LED's from Shifty at Discount Tackle in Hull a couple of years ago for about a fiver, that I've only needed to change the 3AA batteries in once. The beauty of LED's is they have a very low drain on the batteries.

One to avoid is the MFA lamp imho, which you can now pick up for less than a tenner. I have one and usually used to use it on the single LED setting (there is a halogen bulb too) but it still clobbered the batteries pretty quick. My mate who's into electrical stuff reckons the bulb is not a proper LED?

Ron Thompson has a range of cheap LED headlamps to choose from, and there are some other cheap one's in the Gelert range of camping gear.

Once you've used one, I doubt if you'll want to go back to a heavy re-chargeable battery type as they are so light and frugal on batteries. Beware if you use re-chargeable cells in one though as they fade fast when they do go. Although the lamps themselves are so light and cheap you can afford to carry one as a back-up.

Cheers, T
