This is a sea angling forum for the debate of all angling related topics, including: shore fishing, boat and kayak fishing. Here you will find pictures of anglers going sea fishing and catching fish. You will find angling related debate. Sometimes anglers will retain fish for the table. Whilst we respect the personnal choice of anglers to follow catch and release practices, this is not a conservation forum and devout conservationists unable to accept anglers sensibly retaining fish should seek out alternative forums. Anyone preaching catch and release or criticising other peoples reports will have their posts removed.

A NORWEGIAN coastguard vessel claims to have spotted two British trawlers dumping large quantities of fish in the North Sea.

The boat, the KV Leikvin, said it managed to film the incident, but was not able to intervene. The trawlers have not been publicly named as yet.

The dumping of fish, a controversial issue within the UK fishing industry because of the way quotas are regulated, is illegal in the Norwegian controlled sector of the North Sea. In this case the fish was caught in Norwegian waters, but was dumped in the British sector which is permissible under EU regulations.

According to the Norway Post newspaper, the British trawler skipper told the Norwegian coast guard that it did not pay to keep fish measuring less than 80 centimetres. The Norwegian coastguard, further stated that the British trawlers caught a total of 6,642 kilos of cod and saithe (coley). Of this, altogether 5,170 kilos or 78 per cent of the catch was dumped.

No they switch species usually. They will have a few goes at cod, then switch to shellfish. Also having a go at Whitngs and mackerel etc if quota allows. Its quite a juggling act for them and is governed by what quota they have.

So i was told Glenn, they are not allowed to land Whitings or Mackeral, apparently there is also very little cod quota for rent at the moment. The prawn boats are having a massive year off this part of the coast, even the Danish are towing not too far off, theres a Danish boat there at the minute towing 8 NETS AT ONCE !!!. As for the Shellfish fishing, there has been 3 very big scottish Beamers landing into Scarboro for a while now, they are hammering the shells but are towing all the Brid potters gear away. They have all had to move their gear inside of 6 mile or they are just getting smashed by the scallopers. The brid skippers had a meeting with the main culprit in Scarborough on thursday which has ended with the scallopers having another 20 mile box opened up to them. One skipper who lands to us said they have flattened the ground where they had their pots  and won't even bother moving them back onto it when the scottish boats go as there is nothing left of it... tight lines

Sad about the prawns and scallops  Martin. The same "fish to oblivion mentality" was the story with cod in 96-98 and 10 years later its only just on the up. Must be concerning times for those small timers who used to rely on the grounds before others came to ruin it for them.
