You need a GPS Gibbo I just got one and used it for the first time yesterday in the fog It was marvellous what an amazing piece of kit It put me everywhere I wanted to be and got me home without a hitch Amazing I wish Id got one ages ago...

Aye, after reading your report I was dead keen to get out on the Yak yesterday but the fog put paid to that. Even if I had a GPS I dont think I would have gone out on the yak though, I'm a right wimp!

Acko mate, you are taking a huge risk going to sea if it's as thick as guts even with a GPS,all the lads around here have had Gps systems for years and it's a big no no to even think of going in it.It's not the fact that you might know where you are and what you are doing, but what if there are others around who don't?? A malfunction of the system or a battery going dead could leave you in the sh1te mate as if you cannot see land,it is very very disorientating,i have been caught in it under Bemmo, one minute happily drifting along a 100 yards from the cliff, the next wondering where the furk the cliff has gone If it wasn't that thick then i apologise but just don't want to see a needless accident happen and someone get hurt or worse....tight lines Aye, after reading your report I was dead keen to get out on the Yak yesterday but the fog put paid to that. Even if I had a GPS I dont think I would have gone out on the yak though, I'm a right wimp!
You're not a wimp at all Matty, sensible decision,it's been thick as guts down here lately and having been taking my own boats since i was 14,now 33, i took one look Saturday morning and went straight back to bed...tight lines

very iffy is the fog like, once fishing around 3mile off the pier ends and the fog came down on us,before we knew it we were somewhere off sandsend when the fog lifted, all you could hear was voices from other boats and engines running not knowing how close you are to them, thing is if they're running an engine they cant hear you and vice versa. very scary next time i see fog when out i'm heading in was it foggy on the coast this morning at all anywhere? pea soup here and i'm 20 mile inland

And you have to remember yaks dont show up on radar very well as they are so small and so close to the water

gps is good for knowing where you are in the fog, but unless you have radar aboard you can't track the movements of other shipping around you or the course they are steering..(scary) small boats with radar will be able to pick you up, the the big ships running in and out of the tees will go straight over the top of you. they won't know you are there... http://www.aisliverpool.co.uk/currentmap.php?map=tees

You really wouldn't like it coming across Brigg End with a South Easterly against an ebbing tide,it's absolutely evil and still makes me nip even today... .........tight lines

I only went off 1/2 mile in the fog No way Id go off any where near the shipping lane Its a calculated risk I feel comfortable with it But I wouldnt recomend it to anyone else. Anything can happen out there as we all know I was going to go off this evening but I saw the Fog and the swell and decided IF IN DOUBT DONT GO OUT... So I went for a pint instead

i have learned a lesson smokey !like you say its ok relieying on this equipment but very scary if it was to fail a tanker traveling at say 20 notts and visibilty down to 100 yards does not leave you much time to get out ov the way ! not worth it !
