This is a sea angling forum for the debate of all angling related topics, including: shore fishing, boat and kayak fishing. Here you will find pictures of anglers going sea fishing and catching fish. You will find angling related debate. Sometimes anglers will retain fish for the table. Whilst we respect the personnal choice of anglers to follow catch and release practices, this is not a conservation forum and devout conservationists unable to accept anglers sensibly retaining fish should seek out alternative forums. Anyone preaching catch and release or criticising other peoples reports will have their posts removed.

Big Plaice?
« on: May 31, 2007, 10:13:42 PM »
Hi all,

I'd quite like to latch onto a big flattie one day, I've had a go down Hayling Island around easter time and had fish to about a pound and a half but none of the 3-4lbs whoppers you see in the press.

In the 70's plaice of 5-6lb were regularly reported off this coast, often from cobbles fishing out of Brid' over mussel beds. In those days the tackle provided usually involved a two hook pat' that was baited with mussel (plus a broom handle, 8" Scarboro' pin and pound of lead  :-X :-X). I think when the pirks and muppets (lures not anglers ::)) took over, the plaice catches obviously dried up.

Anyone know if they are still about or had any good ones from the shore locally? They are quite difficult to catch I'm told as they turn up in nets where they're rarely caught. I've also heard that commercial boats have trawled up plaice to 20lbs in UK waters.

Anyway, I'd be interested in anyone's views on the topic of these fish?

Cheers, T

i like a bit of plaice fishing myself prof as they can be targetted succesfully in cumbria, its never gonna be the most exciting form of fishing but enjoyable all the same,a few years back the plaice matches herewere maybe won with 8lb of fish but it was 3 or 4 good plaice, then it went down hill, then a lot of small plaice started showing and the plaice fishing isnt too bad now, heres a link to a match result at easter.

biggest plaice was about 2, 2and a half pound.
my own biggest is only 2lb4 but iveseen them up to 4 and a half, they are a lovely looking fish to catch as well.

Apparently off Flamborough head was a hotspot for big Plaice years ago, a spawning ground I,m led to believe but trawlers put paid to them. Not sure if they just fished them out or ruined the ground  ???

Best plaice I've seen caught from shore (or boat for that) was a mate of mine, Mick Pentin (now lives in Australia lucky git!!) got a 3 1/2lber from Outscaur on the Brigg, one February, probably late 70's :o

Despite hundreds of hours on there since, never seen another of any size.

I've not heard of a good plaice for many years in this area even from the boats but I think there is a still a chance of taking small plaice around Bridlington or in Filey bay. There used to be quite a few small plaice in the Humber but I have not seen one for many years. The biggest I've had from the shore in this area would be around 10oz

You'll have to travel to catch a good plaice. I've had them to 1lb 8oz in Wales and to 1lb 12oz in Ireland. The only 2lb plus fish I've had were from a boat in Luce Bay.

Had little ones off the East Pier before, in amongst the dabs, but only small....mind you, I suppose it was a good few years ago now, maybe 8-10 years. Don't time fly!!!
