I understand that bass have very good eyesight and are caught in total darkness on a lure/plug at times and genrally the best time is in poor light dusk or dawn so i was wondering why when there is colour in the water that catches often become poor even in daylight?? Surely if they are feeding in total darkness on partially sight/vibration this would still apply when the water is coloured, yet this seem's not to be the case..

Any thoughts on why this happens?

Would it be that in clear water at night time they can still see something - like seeing a silhouette. eg humans see silhouettes of a person or a building at night even though its dark. Whereas in coloured water it is just impossible to see through the water. A bit like it being foggy for us ?

Like I say a stab in the dark, and probably a daft theory.

Maybe its just a confidense thing gary .... ive had bass on lures in partially coloured water at the beginning of a ruff up or just after a ruff up when the water colour is dissapating , But i suspect in really coloured water the bass may change there diet and feeding patterns from sight/vibration to scent /vibration (meaning u will still get em if they are there ). Maybe the baitfish and watever they are feeding on in clear water , will obviously move off shore under really mucky conditions so the bass will modify there feeding style from sight and baitfish to scent and crabs etc etc , that may of been washed out , All you can do is give it a go , you never know , and wont find out these things unless we try , like i said ive had em in coloured water , but not chocolate .....

I would agree with that glen ,in  that they can still see in the dark...but coloured water would be impossible to see through , but like gary says , they use more than there sight to locate our baits , like vibration etc 
Ide put it down to confidense in it being harder to locate them instead of them locating your lure.....

Maybe its not too disimilar to cod Dav ? In summer they will often feed by sight on sandeels etc - hence the boats taking them on jiggers etc and clear water is needed. Then when winter comes they seem to switch to baits because the rough weather(if we get it) means there is an abundance of shellfish, crustaceans etc for them and the water is often coloured up.

Using a plug that has lots of vibration and noise could bring results, a lot of the shallow diving/surface plugs which is what I think most of use (like Marias etc) although good plugs on their day tend to work more by sight and do not possess in IMHO a lot of noise,vibration when compared to something like a Flashmer Dogger.This has a loud rattle and good movement that can be felt through the rod,they don't cost a fortune and can be worked surface or sub surface.Maybe risking a deeper diver might bring results(as well as a dip in the bank balance)  if its thought the fish are switched on to a change of diet and feeding deeper.

Following my first post glen , i was actually gona say what you said .,in that its a similar situationto cod ,clear water summer cod and mucky water winter fish ......

excellent question gary, which i can't answer for you, but a good few years ago i was on w'by west spinning for macky, when it started to get dark the water erupted with fish boiling on the surface, there was fish jumping out of the water, hitting the baitfish, there was a big full moon that night and we caught fish on the spinner right through into the night, mainly coalfish, at 1am, still hooking fish.
there was a bloke on there who glenn will remember, a lovely fella called graham, he told me that the fish keep on feeding because they pick up vibrations, which was something to do with their latteral line, some sort of radar built into the fish.
i wonder if bass have the same capabillities

Hi Lobbers,

Graham still fishes you know. He is as old as moses now  but still fishes every summer. He is the float fishing champ.
