Polite Notice

This is a sea angling forum for the debate of all angling related topics, including: shore fishing, boat and kayak fishing. Here you will find pictures of anglers going sea fishing and catching fish. You will find angling related debate. Sometimes anglers will retain fish for the table. Whilst we respect the personnal choice of anglers to follow catch and release practices, this is not a conservation forum and devout conservationists unable to accept anglers sensibly retaining fish should seek out alternative forums. Anyone preaching catch and release or criticising other peoples reports will have their posts removed.

Shirley bassy has a question  :cheesy: .

I love my jointed thundersticks and my chrystal minnows but lost a couple in the kelp recently, without resorting to poppers what is the shallowest/ sub-surface lure available??

Just been looking at the maria range Ken, They seem to work quite shallow at 30 and 60 cm for the bw and sw.

Them rapala sub walks might fit the bill , i actually got a couple from bass pro for this very situation ,but just carnt get out of the habit of  using extra shallow plugs ,,, as yet ......
Like glen says you could always try maria angel kiss plugs , which is basically sub surface , just depends on how deep the kelp is tho .

thanks guys, will do a search, been out a few times this year over low water in clearish water ( heres hoping for more) and its like a sub tropical forest down there, with stacks and deep gullies.

Off on a tangent,  Glenn your idea of float fishing must really be worth doing, last time out on the yak I purposely dropped a jellyworm stright down the edge of a kelp bed and drop off (from 4 ft to just less than 20 foot deep) and had my biggest pollock ever within seconds. Watched one of Henrys mates float fishing for pollock the other night and doing well - you dont need to fish too deep as the fish rised to the bait, plus anyway stop knot fishing isnt that difficult.

Using really shallow divers and floating gear could really possibly open these areas up

As saltwater lures go I don't you can get much shallower than the Jointed Thunderstick Ken, there are shallower freshwater lures that will work to 12" max but these are more rounded rather than the slender lures used for Bass. The Thunderstick on a slower retrieve should only go 8" down anyway, try slowing it down a tad  (that's what our lass said! fnarr fnarr)

Thanks Sam, its a nightmare down there over low water, think I'm going to have to be a lot more accurate when fishing them, so all down to user error  :cheesy:
