You will find angling related debate. Sometimes anglers will retain fish for the table. I've been a busy bee making up flies for a few of the lads on here and look to have them finished by early next week.

Here's a few examples:
Obviously the popper will fish right on top while the unweighted subsurface ones should fish just under, creating an appealing 'bulge' in the water. The leaded ones will sink at a medium speed and those with metal eyes should go down at a canny rate.
As with most of my fly fishing I'd rather have a lot of 'suggestion' than direct imitation which generally allows the fly to have more action in the water.

No worries Phil, and Glenn I'll sort you out with one to use as a dropper once I've got this lot finished.
I've just got hold of some of the blue material you can see in the 'sprat/sandeel' flies in green as well.

Just been doing some research on prices of such flies and the popping bug, which is essentially a 'Crease Fly' would cost £6:95 at Sportfish and £4:45 elsewhere surprise ugly
Now even though they are a pain in the hoop to tye as the ethafoam needs heating and shaping a few times then colouring I wouldn't dream of charging that!

They,ve just got to work  surprise. Almost bought a fly rod and reel in Dartmouth last weekend  cheesy As I,ve said before I reckon a yak is the ideal fly fishing tool as you can always posistion yourself with the wind behind you and those fly's worked just over the kelp fronds at low water will be spot on  kiss

I've always wondered about fly fishing in the sea. Its not something that has ever really appealed to me. I've always had this thought that people only do it "because they can". I always thought that there were better ways to catch a fish.

Am I wrong ?  gum

Those were my thoughts too Glenn. In the right conditions though I bet it could be great fun and fairly productive too. I think the biggest drawback is obviously the wind. It,s something thats in it,s infancy really but if more anglers fished like this I reckon the results might be quite suprising. Fortunately some of the fresh water lads have taken up yakking so it will be interesting to see how they get on. Clive has tried it but I,m not too sure how succesful he has been, maybe he will let us know.

those flies look realy good bucko credit to ya mate yes

i was watching the fishing adventurer the other night that Cyril bloke,i really like him he's very passionate about his fishing,
and never gives up,he was using a tassel from a popper plug,he cut off one hook of a treble and used it as a fly, and caught fish with it , plus unlike me he never fails to catch a fish or two,

Yeah must admit i like watching that fishing adventurer , that cyril is off his head ........
and i definetly agree flyfishing in the sea is new to us northern lads and i dont think we should get stuck in our old ways of fishing , i have a couple of spots that will be ideal for fluff chuucking and must admit its something i have been thinking about for a while......

Glenn, one time i was fishing with the plugs and there was a few others plugging and it looked perfect, i was certain there was bass in front of me, yet they didn't seem intrested in the plugs, this was confirmend when a bloke came with his fly rod and first chuck he hooked and landed a nice bass on the flie, and then hooked and lost a much bigger fish, I think the bass were focused on feeding on small sandeel, as he was the only one to catch...

Certainly is a funny old game......  yes
I am no flie fisherman but i now carry some bass flies in my bag, thanks to a kind forum member who made me some to try, i will probably fish them trailing behind a bubble float, just in case i come across the same situation again... If that man hadn't of came down and caught with the flie, i would of probably said that there just wasn't any fish around, but there was fish there they just wanted a sandeel type flie rather than the fish type plug...

To answer your question Glenn, I thought it was a bit like 'p*ssing in the wind' when my mate first convinced me to give it a go in Wales and I try to fish the fly as much as possible when on the rivers.
However, when bass are just following a plug or spinner a fly can make all the difference. Both Ray and Gary raise good points though- As Ray mentioned, with a kayak and the correct density of fly line the fly can be 'hung' in the best spot as the fly should have an 'action' that is stimulated by tide, wind on the line and water movement without any need for retrieval in some cases. And as Gary mentions, when the fish are locked onto inch long sandeels swimming just subsurface then having something that 'matches the hatch' so to speak is a valid option. Incidentally, I've looked into the 'bubble and fly' method for bass and it seems that its popular with a Redgill. My thinking is that the wake from the float brings the bass up to have a look and its then they take whats behind it. Its similar to how trout and salmon fishermen use a bushy 'bob' fly to attract fish to the fly below.

I think if we had easily accessable rocky headlands and large estuaries like say Cornwall and Wales it would be a lot more popular up here but there are a few marks I have in mind and a 'shooting head' flyline will certainly come in handy.

I just think with Summer fishing there are definitely times when 'less is more'.
