This is a sea angling forum for the debate of all angling related topics, including: shore fishing, boat and kayak fishing. Here you will find pictures of anglers going sea fishing and catching fish. You will find angling related debate. Sometimes anglers will retain fish for the table. Whilst we respect the personnal choice of anglers to follow catch and release practices, this is not a conservation forum and devout conservationists unable to accept anglers sensibly retaining fish should seek out alternative forums. Anyone preaching catch and release or criticising other peoples reports will have their posts removed.

baits that compliment others
« on: May 20, 2008, 05:43:55 PM »
so what bait do you think compliments another bait ?  we all know that peeler is a first class bait, but very often if you fish it along with fresh lugworm it becomes an even better bait , it becomes very evident in the summer months when fishing for cod

When I saw this I thought you meant like Bait for work Alan. Like ham and cheese or cheese and pickle.

Baits that compliment each other ??? Well surely you cant go far wrong with Crab and Mussels. There are many times I think that if you dont take mussels out with you then you may as well stay at home  I was surprised to learn last summer on a couple of ventures under Bemmo that even in mid summer Disco was using that same cocktail.

Around this area I don,t think you can top mussel/crab but over the years I,ve found that using the bait thats natural to the area you are fishing is best. Blacks tipped with whites work well in Russia   same on the beaches. I found that razor worked well at Cayton then was later told by a local pot fisherman that there are razor beds down there even though I,ve never seen them. Of course there are no hard and fast rules but if food is stirred up during a storm and the fish are feeding on that particular food that is local that area it,s a good time to use it. We noticed that mussel fished well on the Holderness after that rake of them were washed up but never really worked once they had gone. Razor lug is a top bait and I,ve had my biggest fish on it but if I had crab, yellowtails, mussel and whites for every winter match from Northumberland down to Spurn I would be more than happy.

Crab and Mackeral, top Flounder bait. Or Crab and Kipper if you fish the Wear or the Tyne.

black lug / razor cocktails for mid to late winter after a bit of sea

coudn't agree more rob, but i find it fishes very well  ...during.. ! , & probably more so than 'after a bit of sea'.

another of my favorites is mussel , -it goes really well with crab, razor or worm ,
but harking back to the days when i used to work as a charter skipper for a living my experience of mussel as a stand-alone bait was that it fished that well it could often not be bettered by any other , although it could ...sometimes...? be equalled by worm or peeler
on many ocassions i have caught most species on mussel too, such as (obviusly)- cod, ling, pouting, mackeral, dab, plaice and lemon sole, but where it really excells is for haddock.

so basically mussels, for me rate very highly
