Anyone know of a local reel repairer ?

Anyone know of anywhere local to Whitby that I can get a reel repaired/serviced ?

I've got an ABU 6500 CT Mag Elite that I've had for years without any trouble but now its developed a grating sound inside and won't spin freely 

It kinda feels and sounds like its got sand in the works, I'm pretty sure there isnt a lot wrong but nevertheless I'm reluctant to strip it down myself in case I can't put it back together, I've tried a drop of reel oil but that's made no difference.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If it is something as simple as sand/dirt causing the spool to run roughly it is fairly easy for you to sort or at least to find out if it is anything needing more in depth investigation.
With a good flat blade screw driver undo the knurled screws at the handle end of the reel and then remove the whole handle end plate assembly.You will then be able to remove the spool and spindle.
From the spool remove the bearings, flush through with lighter fuel and dry thoroughly.Wipe the spindle and also wipe all surfaces inside to remove any dirt or grit.A couple of drops of chosen oil (red rocket fuel for example) and the carefully re-assemble.
Try that to see if things run smoother, if not and you're not confident venturing inside the end plate assemply perhaps then get someone to look at it.
There was a post on here a while ago about a forum member in Filey offering to service reels.If you are struggling I will gladly strip it and service it for you but I m in Hull and will cost postage costs.
Sounds like the spool/bearings need a clean or possibly the bearings replacing,are they the originals? Has the reel been dowsed in sea water recently ?

Since my initial posting I've let my mate have a tinker with it and luckily it seems to be ok now.

He partly stripped it down and gave it a clean inside then oiled it, I'm no expert with anything mechanical so I was reluctant to try fixing it myself. Fortunately it seems to be nothing more than sand inside and needing a drop of oil.

I'll see how it performs over the next few weeks but hopefully all will be ok

gaz i had the same problem with a sun set orange mag see if the end plate on the mag end has been dinted or slightly concaved as mine was i scrated my head for ages till my father pointed it out to me hope this helps
