This is a sea angling forum for the debate of all angling related topics, including: shore fishing, boat and kayak fishing. Here you will find pictures of anglers going sea fishing and catching fish. You will find angling related debate. Sometimes anglers will retain fish for the table. Whilst we respect the personnal choice of anglers to follow catch and release practices, this is not a conservation forum and devout conservationists unable to accept anglers sensibly retaining fish should seek out alternative forums. Anyone preaching catch and release or criticising other peoples reports will have their posts removed.

Another Sad Loss..
« on: July 27, 2007, 06:06:06 PM »
Heard this morning that Mick Readman had passed away after a long battle with Cancer.

Many of you probably won't know Mick as he's not been too active in fishing circles recently, but he was a mainstay of the Cloughton Club through the '80s & 90s. His finest hour was in the early '80s when he won the All-England with an 8lber from Horseback at Burniston - first fish he'd ever caught on a crab - cod fishing was a winter sport to Mick!!

Those of you who did know Mick will agree that the description "character" nowhere near covered the guy - Blacksmith by trade, in many horsey people's opinion, the best around. Apart from fishing very little he didn't do -  cricketer, golfer, racegoer, darts, doms...the list goes on.

For his sins he used to take me fishing at every opportunity - Tuesday evenings in the winter were regular sessions for me & him. If that wasn't enough for him, he used to take my mate Crossy on a Saturday.

Loads of great memories, too many to mention, most pretty funny - remember the time when we were fishing the slatey scaurs near Cormorany Rock down Ravenscar - things were pretty quiet, so Mick did as he usually did & built a fire. Found a discarded wheel/ hub assembly & threw that on. He settled down for a bit of shuteye, head right next to the fire. Next thing I heard was a huge crack & some part of the wheel bearing flew about a hundred yards up the cliff & gouged a lump out - the bearing grease had boiled & blown the bearing apart - had missed Mick's ear by millimetres...!!!

Another time I nearly got washed in landing a 9lber for him off the cliffs at the back of Cloughton Wyke - he had a broken leg at the time (cricketing injury) & being relatively uninjured (& daft) I was despatched down the path to grab his fish, encountering easily the 2 biggest waves of the night in the act.

Thoughts go out to his wife Dawn, plus Damian, Victoria & Mike.

Thanks for everything Mick....
