You will find angling related debate. Sometimes anglers will retain fish for the table. Advice for a newbie novice?
« on: September 08, 2008, 05:53:16 PM »
First post as a new member to the forum. Please be gentle!

I'm eager to get back to shore fishing after a long absence. My last venture out was in the early 90's when I was pretty dire at catching anything. I'll put that down to having all the gear but no idea! I can feel a flush of embassassment coming on just thinking back to how rubbish I was!

I can see that there are tons of excellent fishing marks featured on the website, and I guess I'm spoilt for choice. But. . . . can anyone recommend to me a nice peaceful daytime spot now the summer holidays are over, somewhere along the Whitby/Scarborough areas where I can practice my casting in relative peace (principally for the safety of others) and improve my general fishing knowledge? I was thinking of somewhere such as Saltwick Bay or Cloughton Wyke. Maybe somewhere with features to fish against would be good, and somewhere that I don't have to cast miles out to reach fish as my casting ability is a bit lacking at the moment. Sorry if this all sounds a bit fussy!

Any recommendations will be gratefully received.

Cheers everyone.

would fishing a pier not intrest you eddie? i took our lass last night, shes a newbie too and she caught herself 8 whities in an hour and a half on steetley, she loved it.the main thing with starting fishing is actually catching fish, not casting miles or hunting for a big cod. fishing piers gives you the chance to catch a lot more than you would from the shore if you know how to target whats there. two hook flappers size 1 hooks and enjoy

baza has a good point.  If you don't gain some early success in anything you try you can lose momentum.  The lads on here will put you right I'm sure and a bit of homework will bring results.  Tight lines.

Cheers for that fellas.
I used to fish Whitby west pier pretty regularly on summer nights years ago when I was in my late teens/early twenties, and I never caught a thing, which most probably and ultimately discouraged me from pier fishing, but by my own confession I used to chuck out any old bait in any direction and expected to catch!
Maybe I should give the west pier another go. I'll bear in mind your Steetley recommendation too, but I'm not sure I could bare the shame if I ended up being out-fished by women! (har har!)
I'll be pleased to receive any face-to-face advice if anybody sees me on the west pier. You won't fail to miss me - I'll be the bloke untangling the birds nest whilst trying to get the baited hook out of my hood!

never been to steetly but i know you have to be careful where you park. I'm sure someone will tell you where but i read on another site its best to park the car in an estate somewhere and walk (a fair way) to the pier

You can't fail on Whitby pier as Bazza said a 2 hook flapper size 1 with squid, lug or fresh macky and your away. don't try and blast it miles and change your bait regular.

When I first started the best fish I caught there were no more than 10 to 20 yards out with a knackered old rod. I had some great codling, bass and and Thorny's only the other year.

Steetley, - if you drive round the old works that have been flattend, assuming they aint bloked it with huge rocks again and park so you can see where pier itself, then you can keep an eye on ya motor, although this will only mean you can watch em nicking it from that distance. but, lads come and go so tends to be folk walking about putting the swines off twocing.  i been a few times with my mate and never had any bother. seen some cracking fish come out of there, def worth a go. enjoy!!!!

you obviously didnt read another thread, also on another site a couple of months ago.

a few lads who fish there regularly parked exactly where you described. when they went back there cars were full of holes. a couple of lads had used them for targets using high powered air rifles while hidden in the rubble.

that site is always crawling with lads looking for anything to break or sell. they can also watch the pier for anyone coming off while they do what they want to your vehical.

its not worth the worry for the sake of a few minutes walk.

Only caught a flatty but it don't matter as long as you enjoy yourself in my opinion.

By the way, this is the first fish i'd caught since some type of shark thing off Montrose, 1975
