This is a sea angling forum for the debate of all angling related topics, including: shore fishing, boat and kayak fishing. Here you will find pictures of anglers going sea fishing and catching fish. You will find angling related debate. Sometimes anglers will retain fish for the table. Whilst we respect the personnal choice of anglers to follow catch and release practices, this is not a conservation forum and devout conservationists unable to accept anglers sensibly retaining fish should seek out alternative forums. Anyone preaching catch and release or criticising other peoples reports will have their posts removed.

1st crack at the holderness thornys 07
« on: March 10, 2007, 12:14:30 AM »
Reports of odd thornbacks thru the week had really got my juices flowing for a early season session
so decided to head out with only squid and sandeel baits for a few hours

Straight away was getting pestered by big yting, so on wwnt the Full squid baits in the hope of giving the bigger fish a chance to get to the bait before the whiting.

1 hr before hi- water, and whole squid at 70yds was snaffled by this heavy wight early season thornback

didnt weigh it but it would have been between 7-8lb

quick pic and returned

ended the night with few more whiting and a doggy
Summers here at last ! ;)

Nice to see Chris, well done. Would you say that Squid are the top bait for these fish ? A lad in our club caught a couple a few years ago and took them on mussel fished at very close range. I guess if he got 2 in a night they will be in that area. Do you have any tips for anyone wanting to give it a go. I know at our club match the other night one of the lads said he was going to try for them locally.

all i got that on glenn was half a squid on a 3/0 pennal lobbed out about 60 yds onto a sand bank.
squid is as good as anything, mid summer they might switch onto crab baits wrapped in squid

but they are so unpredictable to locate even on this coast never mind a coast that is not noted for them.....

just look for sandbanks, or sandy gullys, coloured water and a bit of tide i woukld say

Met up with mike r last night on the beach for a early thornback session as mike has yet to catch a thorny from the coast, went down onto the beach and met up with sean who was already fishing, he said he had just had a good bite on squid so hopes where hi as a few fish.
things started slow for a few hours with just yting then i had a gentle slack line bite on a squid bait resulted in this doggy

loads more whiting followed up to hi water
when sean pilled on a load of yello tail lug and burgled out a cod about 2lb

mean while mike R was emptying the sea of the whiting stocks....lol

just on top of the tide i had pulled in a rig which i had lost early
and attache don the end was a thorny about 3lb (quick unhook and returned)

brilliant night, great company and great weather

mike R and sean will add more pics from there cameras later i suppose
