This is a sea angling forum for the debate of all angling related topics, including: shore fishing, boat and kayak fishing. Here you will find pictures of anglers going sea fishing and catching fish. You will find angling related debate. Sometimes anglers will retain fish for the table. Whilst we respect the personnal choice of anglers to follow catch and release practices, this is not a conservation forum and devout conservationists unable to accept anglers sensibly retaining fish should seek out alternative forums. Anyone preaching catch and release or criticising other peoples reports will have their posts removed.

1st Bass on a "Popper"
« on: July 01, 2008, 07:39:46 AM »
Missed my yakking slot last night so decided to have a go plugging instead. There was still a little colour in the water and my old faithfull maria chase wasn,t doing the buisness. They are not the best casting plug, and even though they work the shallows it was still getting snagged on the submerged bladderwrack. Decided to have a go with the yo-zuri mag popper as it would cast a little further and might attract something if I could work it properly  Just about to give up on it after a while when a bass came flying out of the water  :surprise:... and missed it  :cheesy: That gave me new confidence and it wasn,t too long before I caught my first popper bass. Managed to get another too a while later and had two other takes by flying bass, brilliant fun!

Well done Ray  I bet you are one happy chappy, now that conditions have calmed down a bit I think some evening sessions are in order with the surface lures

Nice one Ray, and a confidence booster to boot.

I had a good swirl to a Chug Bug last night but alas it didn't really want it enough.

The Yo Zuri's soon led to a miracle catch though.............

Can,t wait to have another go now  :cheesy: I nicked all my popper moves off baza and to be honest I don,t think I would have caught one without his help. I tried the hydro popper first which casts a bit better than the mag popper but it does not have the same zig zag motion. My biggest problem was keeping the gulls off it so it must have looked fairly realistic and they were not interested in any of the other plugs. Later in the evening I was trying to get it to pop loudly, anyway I did the best one of the night and about half a second later the second bass hit it  :surprise: maybe coincidence though.

get in there ray. looks like you where plugging in the dark. theres nowt like a bass rising to a plug to make your heart pound

It was just before dusk just then baza but I used the flash. Using surface lures is something else, it wasn,t the best conditions but now I,ve got a bit more confidence I,ll use them more often and if conditions are pefect it should be brilliant.

Thanks for your comments lads it,s good to share it with you all.

Great stuff Ray, nice one  Once you pop you just can't stop   I tried a yo-zuri mag popper the other night but the only thing i could tempt were damn gulls.... they were trying to attack the lure so i switched to the trusted maria chase lure and caught this little fella...

It took the plug at my feet just as i was going to lift it from the water.

Dav,

'Walk the Dog' (Lucky Craft Sammy) style surface lures go side to side where as standard poppers like the Chug Bugs just, well, pop! (in a straight line) :cheesy:
