Not a bad start at all. I read that Glenn had a 21 pounder the other week so there certainly is some bigger ones about this year. Good luck to all those taking part. I will be across to have a go next weekend.

These are a good stamp of fish for this time of year. Good luck to anglers and skippers alike.

An 11 pound 9 ounce cod from Rich Wards boat Shytorque has gone into the lead on the first day of the spring angling festival at Whitby.

Second and third place went to anglers from Paul Kilpatrick’s boat Sea Otter 2. Again it was 2 cod that took the prizes, one of 11 pounds dead and a second of 10 pounds 7 ounces.

I hope you are right Paul but I think the predicted easterlies will mean some fog around especially early on. I like a bright sky to bring the best out of the shads myself. Anything red or orange was working for us on Sunday.

There's a fine line between fishing and just standing on the shore like an idiot.

Tides are good, the easterly winds are the problem and they always seem slow to clear. Fog could stay for days.

One blessing with a true easterly on a small tide. The water will remain clear, or if it was dirty it will clear out. But if it comes northerly, well that's a different story.

One of the festivals last year was fished through quite a bit of easterly (Think it was the summer one) and the fishing remained good.
