Two new volunteer crew members have been welcomed into the fold at Flamborough lifeboat station. Jemma Grant, (18) , a student living at Church Lane Flamborough, and Matthew Emmerson, (19), a fisherman who lives at Castle Crescent Flamborough, are now part of the regular crew for the RNLI.
Jemma, who is currently studying A levels, hopes to gain a place at Plymouth University studying Geology. She is one of three girls on the crew and said “having lived in Flamborough all my life, I have seen the lifeboat launched many times. I know what an important part the RNLI plays in saving lives at sea, and wanted to be involved in this vital service in our community”.
Matthew, who first experienced fishing on his father’s coble when he was just seven years old, has now become one of the regular crew on the fishing coble which operates out of North Landing. He said “becoming one of the crew has been a natural progression for me, both my father and grandfather were members of the lifeboat crew and my uncle is currently a member of Bridlington RNLI. As a fisherman, I know how important the RNLI is, it is challenging role and I am really enjoying being a volunteer.”
Jemma and Matthew will be attending the RNLI Inshore Lifeboat training course later this year in Poole, and regularly go out on training exercises with other members of the crew from Flamborough.
