kayak wreck fishing, part 2
« on: October 29, 2009, 12:16:19 AM »
earlier this year myself & ken had a go at wreck fishing when we headed of to a wreck 4 miles robin hoods bay, in terms of fish that trip was not too successful  although we were pleased with our attempt managing to locate and fish a wreck normally only accessible to larger vessels. we had intended to try again but due to weather or other priorities we had not had another go until today.
our target today was a wreck that i had been told by divers holds a few nice cod & is a bit closer to land being only 2 miles out, but still a 4 mile paddle from an easy launch site so in order to shorten the trip we decided to launch from Burniston.

paddled out past a group of scarborough boat anglers uptiding & had a little chat, they asked where we were going & wished us well with a slightly disbelieving look when i said 2 miles off to a wreck  :surprise:

nice light winds when we got to our mark, but we struggled initially to find the wreck as it was not exactly on the position i had, but after about 40 Min's of paddling a grid search around it we managed to mark it & set to fishing.

unfortunately i had left the squid in the freezer  so it was shads or nothing, second drift & i had a nice codling just under 6lb onboard, ken had a little session of catch & release dropping about 3 off, one from out the yak  before he got down to business with a vengeance.

as usual the wind started to pick up & a bit of chop but with the the drogues out we were able to get a good drift over the wreck most times & although it was not lifting with fish we both managed half a dozen each mostly cod between 4 & 6lb & a few smallish ling around 5lb.

with the short days we headed back in about 16:00 & the Coronia was so surprised to se two Kayaks approaching from seaward that he altered course to come have a look  :embarrass:
one of the passengers asked what we were doing so i replied in my best foreign accent "me no speaka mucha de Eenglish, is that England" they kindly all confirmed that it was
got ashore just before dark & after draggingnthe yaks over the rocks, up the steps & towing up the path we both agreed that next time we Will go for the 4 mile paddle instead

Another good day afloat with good company& a bit more knowledge gained, will fill that Dorado fish room with big fish one day

Great report as always Dave, a good days fishing for you and Ken  Would love to venture out to the wrecks but I reckon I'd need to do a bit of exercise and obtain a slightly faster yak to do that distance! Bet the wind made the paddle back a long haul
How can I miss you if you won't go away...

Aims for 2010:

#Land a few more double figure Cod
#Land a new pb Bass & Pollock
#Win the Filey kayak comp (can live in hope!)
#Never land a bloody Weaver fish!!

Ye was a really enjoyable day if just a little knackering, that really is not an easy launch point  :surprise: :surprise:

Just a ew pics from me as I was either trying to dredge the wreck back to the surface, paddling back up to my drift or on the few occassions elevating fish to the surface

Spawneys 1st fish

No clues as to where we were then ..

Will post a few more tomorrow

not on it but close, I new we were in the right place when i saw the pots but must have shot them alongside, it seemed to be fairly broken up as we were marking small sections away from the main wreck. interesting bit of ground at about a mile off that had a lot of pots on it & showed fairly rough on the sounder (75ft). is it worth a go ?

Always worth a go Dave,if there is feed there, the fish should be there.I don't work north of the harbour so don't know the ground that way too well,Mww will probably know if it fishes or not.If you are planning any more trips on the wrecks this year, let me know,i had a fleet on one about 2.5 miles from scarborough harbour and had plenty of 4lb ers in the pots.Theres 2 or 3 wrecks within 1.5 miles of each other, all decent sized lumps as well so should be easier for you to suss... tight lines

Good report lads, well done.

Guess it was Taurus you were on? To be honest it's not one that I think we tried when I had my boat & we went up that way, probably 20 years ago now - we used to do well on some wrecks same sort of distance off a bit further up - Constantia/ Southborough/ Glow...ah those were the days!! My mate's brother had an 8lb turbot off Constantia...

Dave, I don't believe you forgot the squid....

Sounds like you had a decent paddle and caught a few fish, what more could you ask for in late October...

Looking at the forecast I think we may have seen the last of those kind of trips for a few days...

Never mind a decent swell will  give you the chance to snap the point off the Alaw doing enders in the surf.... :blindfold:

correct first time Martin, was told by someone who dives it that it usually has fish on it & does not get that much attention from the anglers, cetainly all those you mention are well within our range especially in summer.  I think we might have done better if i had remembered the bait , was marking plenty of fish on the sounder.

Be worth trying those a bit further up when you get chance, maybe launch at Cloughton? Be interested to hear if they still throw a few fish out, used to 20+ years ago, but then got a lot of attention from netters...probably ok now. One thing's for sure, the amount of stainless jiggers we got through over them, there'll be plenty of wreckage left for years!!

Good stuff and a great report. Amazing the difference in the sea from a bit further down as it was like glass until later in the afternoon off Bempton etc. The water must still be clear up there to catch without bait, at the moment we always take some and have had to do all year. Gutted a ling yesterday with two massive hearings in it, how does that work bottom dweller versus mid water fish??

I have caught herring on the bottem with hokeyes before today. Usually foul hooked but they do go down the bottem occasionally.
