Live Baits For Bass - Joey mackerel / bassing
« on: September 14, 2009, 05:00:12 PM »
Went bassing at the end of last week (on Friday) with a friend and as we were feathering some launce, caught some of the smallest joey mackerel I've ever seen.

This was one of half a dozen joeys we caught; some were even smaller than this.  We also caught a dozen or so sprats, which I'd never caught here before.    The joeys and sprats went into the wooden courge along with the 40 or so launce.

When we got to the bass mark and opened the courge, I was eager to try one of the joeys under my float.  Annoyingly however, whilst the launce were still fighting fit, sadly the joeys and sprats had popped their clogs.  I guess they're a pretty fragile and it might have been better to keep them away from the launce in a separate container.

With 5 minutes of starting, we had our first bass, shortly followed by three or four more over the next 20 minutes, before it went quiet and we had nothing for the next hour or so.  We tried moving, but still couldn't find the bass, so we decided to troll some plugs to cover some ground and if we found the bass again, the plan was to resume fishing with the live launce in that area.

Needless to say 20 minutes of trolling produced nothing and when both plugs became snagged on the bottom, my patience for trolling had all but run out! Having recovered both lures (whew!), I noticed that there was a coloured area of water and we decided to give that area a fish with the launce. Almost immediately we were back into bass again, but unlike the start of the session when we were both connecting to all our bites, we started to miss no end.  I guess the bites to hookups dropped by at least 50% and it didn't matter whether I used small or massive launce - the results were still the same. That day, the coloured water fished far better than the clear and we had quite a busy afternoon catching somewhere in the region of 20 odd bass, the biggest being around the 5lb mark.

I couldn't fish the next day, but my friend went back with his son to fish the same mark again. That evening, I'd just arrived back home when my wife came out to say John was on the phone - I immediately thought the jammy devil had had a bumper haul or massive bass, but no, John explained that his wheel had just fallen off his boat trailer on the way back home over the Wolds going back towards Malton and did I know of a recovery firm that could help!!!?   John is meticulous with his boat and trailer maintenance and so how this happened still remains a complete mystery.  Luckily there was no-one else involved at the time and the trailer doesn’t seem to be damaged.

When I enquired what they had caught the answer was - only one!  Just shows how one day can vary to the next!

Great report as always Rupert. those Joeys would have made a great bait if they had stayed alive
There's a fine line between fishing and just standing on the shore like an idiot.

Great report Rupert, sounds like some good fishing there mate. That's a serious livebait tank you have there as well!   Apparently mackerel will die once they have come in contact with human skin, not sure how quick they die but those fish obviously didn't appreciate your fine livebait tank.
How can I miss you if you won't go away...

Aims for 2010:

#Land a few more double figure Cod
#Land a new pb Bass & Pollock
#Win the Filey kayak comp (can live in hope!)
#Never land a bloody Weaver fish!!

Another great report Rupert. I enjoy reading about these type of tactics and I really wish I could locate some joey mackerel like those. Its a shame they pegged it like.  Have you got enough room on the boat to rig up one of those livebait tanks where you constantly pump the water in from the sea ??. Not that I know what Im talking about but they look good and maybe would keep those little mackerel alive a bit longer.

Really nice report Rupert.  Great to hear of someone doing it different!  Live mackerel are big on the south coast for bass, but I've heard their mackerel are tiny compared to ours (size counts, as it always does!).  Last time I was out, I found bass in a coloured patch of water, almost like they were grubbing around in bottom.  Seemed to me that the coloured water (which was very close in) gave them a little protection, put them off their guard so to speak.

Johntie - Yes, it was the nearside wheel!    The mystery is only 3 weeks earlier John had stripped the trailer wheels down to check everything was as it should be and said there was no sign of corrosion on anything.

We were out there fri. on Toiler Rupert. It took us until after lunch to shake the cod goggles off and then did 3hrs bassing for nothing. Must have been the ebb tide or were crap :embarrass:
Anyway the point of my post is that the joeys have been around for a couple of weeks now on the banks unlike the normal run of mackys that appear to be long gone (did they ever show?) and we have kept them alive in a large bucket on deck for 2+ hrs. so dont give up just minimum handling on capture and usual water changes. H.

rupert if you e-mail me i will try to shed some light on the mystery of why so many caravans and trailers lose wheels, it recently  happened to me,i am a engineer, and i too had also checked my near new trailer, when obtaining new spares after my incident i was gobsmacked when the trailer parts guy said bet it was the front near side that came off, and guess what, he was spot on, always is, he said, i have looked closely at the problem, and discussed what i think is a fundamental design fault with a leading trailer manufacture, who will not of corse agree, would also bet your friend greased the wheel studs like all good mechanics do, my boat is Jaeger and i fish out of whitby, best whitby fish 20lb ling last sat, johntie31@yahoo.co.uk /Users/johntie31/Desktop/IMG_0077.tiff
