Interesting Day Afloat
« on: August 25, 2009, 10:03:24 PM »
Just returned from an interesting day afloat at Sandsend. Not lots of fish, but I managed a news species for me, a plaice, and a nice pollack on the float and 2 bass over 3lb.

I had managed to source a few lugworm, some sandeel and some squid from Rods and Reels shop in Whitby so I started with a bit of bait fishing at low water just off Sandsend. I anchored up and shot a big bait out in hope of a Thornback or 2. An hour later I hadnt had a bite so I untied myself and did a bit of drift fishing with a 2 hook flapper rig. First drift resulted in a small dab. This isnt what I was after really so I decided on one more drift and if I was still getting dabs I would change tactics and go plugging.

On the next drift my luck changed and I landed a double shot of Plaice. Both good sized fish, but I had no use for them so I returned them. I quickly dropped back in and tried again and not long after I had another plaice - this one was a beauty and looked near 2 pounds although I never bothered to weigh it. I had now been joined by a chap called Kev in a surf kayak who was fishing for mackerel. As he said he liked to eat fish, I gave him the plaice for his tea.

With the tide now pulling through I decided on a bit of plugging for bass. I trolled around for a couple of hours and there wasnt much doing, but the 2 I did get were both nice sized schoolies that went 3-10 and 3-6 on the scales.

As dusk approached I decided I would try a bit of float fishing for bass. I put on a set of sabikis and rounded up 2 small sandeel for bait. I managed to keep them alive in the footwell. I hung one on a 1o hook at a depth of around 9ft and cast it in, an waited......, and waited and waited. Twenty minutes later the float slowly went from site and I had a bite. I struck hard but met thin air and the fish had gone, when I wound in the sandeel had gone too.

So on with my second and last sandeel. Sadly the smae happened again and I had no sandeel left. I decided to try a piece of mackerel strip. Almost instantly the float was under again. This time I connected to what felt to be a very nice fish. After a bit of a scrap I landed the brute. Not a bass but a pollack of 7lb 4oz, what a beauty.

I persevered untill dark in search of a bass on the float. Sadly, depsite several good bites, it wasnt to be. So all in all it wasnt a bad day and sure beets working.

great session and report Glenn.
There's a fine line between fishing and just standing on the shore like an idiot.

Interesting write up that Glenn.
You also take the trouble to give details of bait , line set up and species you aim to target.
Informative and useful.

Whatever happens Ken I am pleased that this league has done what I wanted it to do. Quite a few people were reluctant to take part which sort of surprised me, but we even got Dave in on the act in the end. What I wanted from the league was to highlight the true diversity of sea fishing on this coast and I think between us all we have done that. I am not sure of how many species have been caught but its quite a lot and we have also tried some diverse techniques that we may never have bothered with. So I think we are all winners through the knowledge we have aquired. I think the league has taught something new to all entrants.

Next year, something different.

I'm physicaly exhausted with trying to chase fish and mentally kn*ckered too with thinking about it all the time - what to target - were to go - when to go - what to use...

I think I'm enyoying it

yep, unfortunatley underneath the laid back exterior is a competitive edge that i was trying to fight. my only problem I have with the league in its present form is that i think the rewards for some of the crap fish & incidentals is a bit too high. (5lb 12oz bass & a dab = 10 points each) & apart from the evening fishing for thornbacks I have resisted targeting them as i just feel its wasting a chance to fish for better stuff. but I may just have to bite the bullet & do some scratching

I've got nothing against the league and think its a great idea but with not being able to get out on the yak much (2 trips in July and August) I feel that every session is valuable and scratching is wasting my time so I've given up on going for points. If i do happen to catch something that gives me points then I will add them on but Im not specifically goign for them now as i need to make the most of my limited time available onthe yak.

My aim was to get people targeting all species including the percieved crap, a lot of which are still to be located I must add. As people usually target the favoured, bigger better fighting species, To get people to try for the lessor species you have to make it worthwhile in some way - hence the extra points. Im still after a rockling, Scorpion, dogfish and haddock which are proving more difficult than a 3lb+ bass. To do well youve really had to take off the cod and bass goggles and be diverse in approach. Might not be everyones cup of tea but I personally feel I have learnt a lot about things I may never have bothered with (Yesterdays plaice were a real highlight of the year for me) and Ive been taught a lot by the others who are targeting things like tope and mullet.

Have you heard of many plaice coming off Sandsend in the past or was it down to fishing a certain bit of ground?
Had the usual dabs and flounders off there  but never a plaice.
