a hotly contested one this for the club title as well as the individuals,it takes a bit of winning having to be a consistent all round angler,i have had afew top three finishes but never actually won,not consistent enough
a mix of venues and species with the jan match a cod match,then feb and march usually scratchy,april plaice match,then onto the flounder,plaice,bass,eel matches till september when it goes back to the cod matches with maybe dogies about.

THE North West Sea Angling League’s opening competition of the season was held on Harrington beach on Sunday afternoon with 69 anglers - 58 seniors and 11 juniors - fishing two hours each side of low water.

Conditions were reasonable with a light south westerly breeze and calm sea but fishing on a smaller than normal tide for the venue and most of the match being in daylight resulted in low catches.

A total of 74 fish (43 cod, 27 rockling, three flounder, one whiting) came to the scales for 108lb 15¼oz.

League champions Maryport started the new season with a comfortable win with 35lb 3oz, over 15lb clear of last season’s runner-up Workington who had 19lb 10oz. Harrington came third with 17lb 9oz and Rockhoppers fourth with 16lb 5Zoz.

Steve Harkness for Workington had the winning bag with five cod for 12lb 2oz. Ashton Neesham, fishing this season for Maryport, came second with four cod and a rockling for 9lb 4oz closely followed in third by his son Lewis who had four cod for 9lb 3¼oz.

Lewis also won the junior competition comfortably ahead of Ricky Holt of Maryport who had 10¾oz flounder.

Heaviest fish on the night was taken by Les Nicholson for Maryport, a cod for 3lb 10oz.

NORTH West Sea Angling League held their latest competition between Seamill Lane and Lowca Beck on Sunday night fishing three and a half hours up to high water and half an hour after with 49 anglers taking park.WORKINGTON SAC fished a club and league match on Sunday in strong blustery winds and driving rain. Seventeen adults and two juniors fished. The boundary was Seamill Lane to Lowca Beck.

Conditions were poor with rain and a 30mph south easterly wind for the first three hours of the match which made marks like the open section of the Whitehaven west pier too dangerous and St Bees Heads difficult to fish.

The match produced a total of 145 fish - 133 dab, five cod, five rockling and two flounder - for 47lb 11¼oz.

Jimmy Smith for Workington and Tom Whitehead for Rockhoppers tied for first place. Smith took 10 dab and a rockling from the west pier for 3lb 5oz and Whitehead caught the heaviest fish of the night, a cod for 3lb 5oz, taken from Barrow mouth.

Third place went to Mike Laycock for Workington with 11 dab for 3lb 3oz taken from the west pier and fourth place and the junior prize went to Maryport junior member Ricky Holt who took 11 dab from the north pier for 2lb 15½oz.

Workington won the team event with 14lb 4oz, Maryport was second with 11lb 4oz and Rockhoppers came third with 6lb 2½oz.

Other results - Ladies: 1, Sh Harkness, Workington, 6 fish, 1lb 3½oz, 11. Juniers 8-12 years: 1, M Smith, Workington, 1 fish, 4oz, 11pts.


Results: 1, Jimmy Smith, 10 dab and one rockling, 3lb 5oz; 2, M Laycock, 11 dab 3lb 3oz; 3, Derek Foster, 12 dab, 2lb 14½oz. Mark Armstrong had the heaviest fish, a cod of 2lb 12½oz.

Liam Barlow won the juniors with five dab and one flounder for 2lb 1oz. Mathew Smith was second with one dab, for 4oz.

round three of the league on whitehaven piers and st bees heads a huge tide,and rough seas all week leading up to the match,expectations werent high and with the dabs going missing the fishing was hard,the small pier proving the best choice.

fished the big pier myself and didnt have a bite,despite the best of baits and different tactics.


THE latest North West Sea Angling League competition took place between Seamill Lane and Lowca Beck on Sunday with 63 anglers - 49 seniors and 14 juniors - fishing two and a half hours before high water and one and a half after.

Fished on a 9.9-metre tide there was concern that with the weather forecast giving westerly force 4-5 winds the piers would be unsafe to fish. The weather forecast fortunately proved to be wrong and Sunday morning gave a moderate south westerly and a dieing sea.

The fishing was generally poor with only 42 fish - 14 dab, 13 flounder, eight plaice, five rockling and two cod - coming to the scales for 24lb 2½oz.

Maryport won the team event comfortably with 9lb 11½oz, over 5lb clear of their closest rivals Workington who had 4lb 1oz.

Harrington came in third with 3lb 4½oz and Rockhoppers were fourth with 2lb 7oz.

The winning bag went to Steven McAdam for Maryport with a catch of two plaice and two flounder for 3lb 5oz.

Runner up was Darren Pape for Harrington with a cod and a rockling for 2lb 9oz and third went to Rockhoppers veteran Tom Whitehead with the heaviest fish of the match a 2lb 7oz cod.

Whitehead’s third leaves him top of the individual league and he also leads the B League having dropped only one point in the first three matches.

The junior event was won by Lewis Neesham for Maryport with a plaice and a flounder for 1lb 8½oz. Ricky Holt for Maryport came second with a plaice and two dab for 1lb 4oz and Daniel Hannon for Workington came third with a 7oz plaice.

In the ladies’ event Sharron Harkness for Workington won with two dab for 6¼oz.

round four on blackbank,once again the weather was against the anglers and it was poor again.
it was a case of trying to scratch a couple of fish out,i had two flounders but only small fish for 12 oz

THE NORTH West Sea Angling League’s latest competition took place on the beaches between Workington jetty and Long and Smalls garage on Sunday morning with 62 anglers - 53 seniors and nine juniors - fishing three and a half hours before high water and half an hour after.

Conditions for fishing were poor with a brisk and bitterly cold north wind blowing and catches were disappointing with only 42 fish - 25 flounder, 15 plaice and two rockling - coming to the scales for 26lb 13½oz.

Top bag went to Paul Eppy for Workington with three plaice for 2lb 13¼oz. Lewis Neesham for Maryport continued his good start to the season taking second with three plaice for 2lb 6oz and he now leads the individual championship, the A league and thejunior section.

Third went to Barry McGlasson for Harrington with a flounder and a plaice for 1lb 15½oz. McGlasson best fish was a plaice of 1lb 9oz which earned him the heaviest fish prize.

Workington narrowly won the team event with 6lb 8oz, Maryport came second with 6lb 2¾oz. Both clubs now share the lead with 36 points. Third went to Rockhoppers with 4lb 5½oz and Harrington were fourth with 3lb 14½oz.

Matthew Smith for Workington won the 8-12 year-old junior section with a 9oz flounder. Lewis Neesham won the 13-16-year-old junior section. Lee Murphy for Workington came second with a 14oz flounder and Thomas Dixon for Maryport took third place with a 11½oz flounder.

Results - Team: 1 Workington, 6lb 8oz; 2 Maryport, 6lb 2¾oz; 3 Rockhoppers, 4lb 5½oz.

drew my peg in the same place as usual :sick:my fingers must be drawn to that stretch of beach ive fished that stretch of ten pegs nearly every match ive been there.
anyways my experience of that stretch paid off as i easily beat those around me to finish fifth overall with a ground out 13 fish.tactics were simple blast a 6 or 7 oz gripper out into the run while everyone else fished light closer in.
winning the match easily rockhopper steve smith with 24 fish for 800+cm.longest fish 42cm.
my club rockhoppers won the match which considering we had five anglers out and workington had 29 was no mean feat!

Thats a top result for your club Maxie well done. I take it the inter club thing isn't worked on an average then ? In the only interclub match we fish over here its the club with the best average that wins, which usually means the club with the least anglrs.

how it works is only the top five weights in each club counts to the club total weight.
so a club with 29 anglers out can cover a lot more marks or fish more pegs than a club with five anglers.

so my club which at the moment only has about 8 members need all the anglers to do the business on the day whereas a club with 10 good anglers plus another 10 or 15 backup anglers dont need all their good anglers to perform on the day.

Thanks for taking the time to post all them results Maxie, it really is an intresting read... I like the pic of the first cliff i use to like fishing off that big scar in front of there for the plaice on a nice flat sea, it really was a good chuck...never caught a great deal of the top of the cliff tho just the odd small plaice and flounder..

Haha...not sure about that  Wish i had more time now to travel about fishing and learning new spots, maybe when i win the lottery.... I really enjoyed my fishing over the West coast met some really genuine good people over there..
