THE NORTH West Sea Angling League’s latest competition took place on the beaches between Workington jetty and Long and Smalls garage on Sunday morning with 62 anglers - 53 seniors and nine juniors - fishing three and a half hours before high water and half an hour after.
Conditions for fishing were poor with a brisk and bitterly cold north wind blowing and catches were disappointing with only 42 fish - 25 flounder, 15 plaice and two rockling - coming to the scales for 26lb 13½oz.
Top bag went to Paul Eppy for Workington with three plaice for 2lb 13¼oz. Lewis Neesham for Maryport continued his good start to the season taking second with three plaice for 2lb 6oz and he now leads the individual championship, the A league and thejunior section.
Third went to Barry McGlasson for Harrington with a flounder and a plaice for 1lb 15½oz. McGlasson best fish was a plaice of 1lb 9oz which earned him the heaviest fish prize.
Workington narrowly won the team event with 6lb 8oz, Maryport came second with 6lb 2¾oz. Both clubs now share the lead with 36 points. Third went to Rockhoppers with 4lb 5½oz and Harrington were fourth with 3lb 14½oz.
Matthew Smith for Workington won the 8-12 year-old junior section with a 9oz flounder. Lewis Neesham won the 13-16-year-old junior section. Lee Murphy for Workington came second with a 14oz flounder and Thomas Dixon for Maryport took third place with a 11½oz flounder.
