in the final round of the nw sea league in west cumbria it was a tight finish all round,a lot of rocklings about,in fact i moved five times to get out of them, but only found more rocklings, only managed one codling but it wasnt for the lack of trying.

THE final competition of the season took place between Harrington pier and Parton slipway on Sunday night.

Fishing in a moderate north-westerly 70 anglers - 60 seniors and 10 juniors - fished one and a half hours before low water and two and a half hours after.

The fishing did not quite live up to expectations but still gave a total of 142 fish (78 cod, 62 rockling, one flounder and an eel) for 202lb 4¼oz.

This season’s competition have been the tightest for years with nothing in the championships decided before the last match.

In the team event Maryport and Workington went into the match level on points at 90 each. Maryport won on the night with 42lb 14¾oz to take the title by two points from Workington who came in second with 35lb 4¼oz.

In the individual championship Steven George for Workington went into the competition with a 10-point lead over Steven McAdam for Maryport.

George only managed one cod for 2lb finishing outside the points on the night to leave McAdam with the opportunity to finish in the top four to secure the championship.

Unfortunately Steven McAdam’s bag of three cod and three rocking for 8lb 4oz just wasn’t enough and he finished in sixth place missing out by two points leaving George to emulate his dad Tommy’s achievements in the 1980s of winning the league for a second time.

Jeff McAllister for Maryport won on the night with a bag of seven codling and a rockling for 11lb 7¾oz and his late surge in the last few matches earned him joint second place in the championship with McAdam.

In the A league the competition was much tighter with any one of three having a chance of winning. George went into the match in the lead but McAllister’s win on the night eased him from third into the top place beating George by one point.

With McAdam finishing in sixth place, he slipped from second to third finishing three points behind the leader.

Bobby McGlasson for Harrington won the B League with a mixed bag of cod and rockling for 7lb 11½oz and Simon Hogan for Maryport took second place with six fish for 7lb 10oz.

Neither of the leading two Steve Barlow and Mark Armstrong for Workington scored points on the night but still finished first and second as their closest rivals Andrew Foster for Rockhoppers, Gary Lawson for Maryport and Phil Sibbald for Harrington came in ninth, 10th and 11th, not enough to win but earning them all promotion to the A League.

In the junior competitions Lewis Neesham for Rockhoppers won the 13-16 year old section with a cod and a rockling for 2lb 12oz to secure the junior championship.

In the 8-12 year old section second place for Matthew Smith of Workington with a 5½oz rockling wasn’t quite enough to overhaul Robson Bell of Whitehorse, who failed to catch on the night. A Holt of Maryport won the section on the night with a 12¼oz flounder.

In the ladies’ section Sharron Harkness for Workington secured the championship by winning with a cod and two rockling for 3lb 13¼oz.

the odd better fish about as well

Angling

THE White Horse Sea Angling Club’s match last Sunday was fished from Sellafield to Hole in the Wall, for the “Rose Bows” trophy, in a strong north to north easterly wind, over low water.

1 A Pickering: seven cod 12lb 8½oz; 2 A Hartley: two cod (heaviest 8lb 10¾oz) 10lb; 3 P Hodgson: four cod, one rockling 9lb 4¼oz; 4 G Pickering: four cod 8lb 7½oz.

Junior winner Connor Skinner had a 3¼oz dab. The last match of the season takes place this coming Sunday from Sellafield to Lowca Beck. Fishing times are 12pm to 4pm, with the weigh-in at Wellington car park.

THE latest competition for Parton Angling Club was held on Sunday, December 9.

The Rover competition was fished by nine members over high water. First place with a heaviest fish of a cod of 2lb-13oz was Ron Nicholson (senior).

First heaviest bag with two cod and one rockling for 4lb was Stan Ennis, others Paul Underwood (two cod 3lb-14oz), Ronald Nicholson (two cod 3lb-5oz) and Paul Chapman (two cod 2lb-15oz).
